Vibration At Speed When Steering Slightly To The Right

Hi All,

My car has had this for a long time. there is a very annoying vibration when my steering is slightly to the right when travelling upwards of 50mph. I can feel it before as well. BUT when i speed up while controlling the steering wheel with my left hand and just keeping it slightly biased to the left there is nothing. Its as smooth as a baby's bottom.

Also when turning steering from full lock to full lock, there is a very clear play in steering where it feels like you have squished a bush somewhere and gone over it as if a bush is broken somewhere.

Any ideas? me and Konrad recently changed anti roll bar bushes, this has improved the situation somewhat BUT hasnt cured it.

Regards,

Waqar

I would think that is likely to be related to the the disc and pad. Does the vibration actually come from the right side? I had a similar issue with an old Carina E. The fault turned out to be a warped hub assembly. To establish this I raised the front of the vehicle onto jack stands. Start the engine and put into gear. Hold the front wheels in turn to prevent them from spinning. The offending side made a catching noise where the hub was buckled. (this was the disc rubbing against the pad at that point) A replacement hub assembly from a breaker solved the problem.

Alternatively the issue could be tyre related - swap a wheel from front to rear to isolate the noise.

Waqar, you had your car MOTd recently. The test does not pick up issues like yours, especially when the fault happens at 50 mph plus.

Try Gary's suggestion.

If you need a bit of help, let me know.

Buckled wheel, bad tyre?

It depends on how much play. If there is play in the track rods ends, it will show. There could be play on the inner joint.

Recheck the tightness of the wheel nuts (I put the wheel back on last time remember).

I would still go with the unbalanced wheel. What is the condition of the tyre? Old or damaged tyres cause lots of issues like yours.

The tyre needs to be replaced. for sure i know that. its in its very last stages of being legal.

However, if i hold the steering slightly to the left there is absolutely no vibration and acceleration is silky smooth. Mind you this vibration is also evident when accelerating after making a turn. If the turn is to the left, great, there wont be any vibration but if its to the right, i am certain that it ll start to vibrate around 60mph. I very much doubt that this is a tyre issue. I think i definitely have play in suspension somewhere and i need to find it. This play was there way before you put the tyre back on and after new bushes for anti roll bar, its only marginally better.

We also looked at this issue Konrad and found that may be my steering rack bushes are worn.

One other thing that i forgot to mention before Konrad came out was that when on slow speed, i put brakes on, i can feel a play travelling up into my steering column. When we parked the car and looked at the bushed while rocking the steering wheel from side to side, we saw that the rack was moving as if the bushes are loose or worn. These look ok in shape, I am just wondering whether its better to get new bushes or just add a spacer to the bush that ll make it tight??????

But as konrad said, get another opinion on this from somewhere like kwikfit who can put it on lift and check the rack properly for play or any other component for play in it.

Waqar

Hi,

Did new bushes sort the problem as I am suffering similar problems with my auris sr180 - see this post

If so, did you find just the bushes or did you have to buy a complete steering rack?

I would prefer upgraded PU bushes as the weight of the diesel engine puts a lot of strain on the transmission, steering and suspension.

Any constructive comments would be appreciated!!!

Best wishes

Yes replacing the bushes did cure this problem.
