Problem Getting First Gear

I have a problem getting first gear after having put in a pair of new gear rods due to breakage from gear stick to gear box. Installed by a mechanic , I know have problems finding first,second and reverse gears. I having to lift the reverse clip which means I often in the wrong gear which is can be dangerous because instead of selecting first for moving off . I could be easily be in reverse or even third which stalls the engine.

Can anybody help ?

Take it back to the garage - he must have known that there was a problem before he returned the car. The replacement cables may be worn - probably at the gearbox end. The rubber bushes have brass inserts which are too soft affecting gear selection, particularly first. These can be swapped for skateboard wheel bearings.

But they were new gear rods that been put in by the mechanic
