Prius 2004 Mfd Problems

Hi. I have a 2004 toyota prius 54k miles on odo. For the last year I have had problems with the multi function display. Bit recently it has been getting worse.

When I first start the car up it does the regular boot up screen but when it gets to the consumption screen it shows no information.

I press the button for heating and air conditioning and after a pause of how ever long it wants to and says something about the air conditioning not connected.

And messes with radio.

Usually after 15-20 minutes it would work normally.

But latly it's being very intermittent and annoying. Coming on after 20/30 mins and then going off for 5/10 mins then on again for short time. Ect.

Does anyone know what this could be. And how much it would cost to fix.

I'm in the uk aswell. And if any parts I can get myself and do myself would be good.

Have you tried removing the screen and checking that all wiring connections are tight.

It could also be a loose earth connection.

Might be worth getting the 12volt Battery checked. Computers do not work well if under powered.

Had the 12v replaced last month.

How old was it and was it fully charged just prior to fitting, or just fitted from sitting on a shelf?

Possibly an issue with lead free solder used around that time?

I think they can be stripped, reflowed, resoldered....but it's a specialist job.

The bat is brand new.

So I can't do any of that myself?

The most likely problem is a cracked joint on a pcb. They're covered with surface mounted components. Manually resoldering those is possible but you need very good eyesight, a very steady hand, a tiny tip on the soldering iron with (preferably) temperature control and the ability to get the thing apart, fix it and then put it all back together again. Take a look at http://www.artsautomotive.com/publications/7-hybrid/117-prius-2nd-gen-repairing-the-multi-function-display for an idea of what might be involved.

It is a common issue and an expensive replacement. If my memory serves me (as I don't have a gen2) it is a problem with a certain joint on the internal circuit board that requires resoldering but it is buried deep and is a specialist job.

There are companies in the US who specialise in this repair but obviously that could prove expensive and time consuming for a UK owner. The problem does slowly get worse and worse until the unit fails completely.

Sorry.

Does this link help?? http://www.artsautomotive.com/publications/7-hybrid/117-prius-2nd-gen-repairing-the-multi-function-display

Note the warning about high voltages!!!

my Fleet Engineer used to get one from a write off at a scrap yard - always seemed to work well, can't remember what sort of price, but heaps cheaper than new one from Mr T

Again the Battery being brand new doesn't mean its A-okay. Was it pulse charged prior to fitting, and how long as it been sitting on the shop shelf for (most have a production date on them these days). If its been sitting for more than 6 months then its unlikely to last a reasonable amount of time tbh.

Have the issues with the display occurred prior to new Battery fitting?

Have you checked the Battery connections?

I have no idea on how long the Battery has been sitting ect. I had the shop do the work.
