Brakes Squeal

After the first 7.000 miles my 2013 Auris Hybrid started making a small squeal noise when braking and just before come to rest (from say the last 10miles/hour to 0). The local Toyota dealer after checking said that there is nothing wrong with the braking pads (I am not an aggressive driver in any way) and the noise will disappear. Since then the squeal became worse and during my visit to the service today at 10.000miles they said that they will replace the braking pads to see if this will fix the problem. They also said that I should expect a Toyota recall letter for car re-programming. Is there anybody else facing the same problems?

Hello Elias - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

I note that your profile shows you are outside the UK - did the dealer say what the re-programming was for? Could be a fix the Battery issue highlighted in earlier topics.

The brakes on my 2005 Prius started squealing after a few years. It was never resolved in spite of having various bits cleaned and lubricated, pads changed, disks skimmed. In the last couple of years, there was a permanent squeal at low speed whether the brakes were applied or not. It was more embarrassing than anything else, to be honest. Again, that was never resolved - didn't faze the MOT tester or anything. It was a fairly low mileage car and the dealer said I wasn't using the brakes enough :dontgetit: ...

Thank you FROSTYBALLS.

I live in Greece and although there are many Toyotas around, there are not many Auris Hybrid - to be honest I haven't see any other auris hybrid on the road since the new model release (there are many prius taxis though).

The local dealer found through the chassis number that the car is due for a recall and had no idea about the reason.

korat102 I am worried now :dontgetit: .

Taxis would get brake squeal - a lot.

Just have your brakes cleaned properly, copper slipped up and adjusted correctly. They won't squeal again or shouldn't if it's been done properly.

Be careful if you jet wash your wheels as this can strip any protection the copper slip gives. Personally I never jet wash mine prefering to sponge them hand. I have my brakes cleaned as part of the service and my brakes never squeal and never did when used as a taxi. It's just simple maintenance. Look after your brakes and they look after you :)

I was just indicating that it might be nothing to worry about. Didn't cause any problems on my car. Was just one of those annoying things. If you've had them examined by someone who knows what they're looking for, and they've been declared safe then the noise is just a nuisance. You can get rid of it but it'll probably take some work.

You could try roughening the surface of the pads with sandpaper if they look glazed or you could try a different material for the pads. The noise could also be caused by parts vibrating in which case dismantling the brakes to clean them and using a lubricant on the *back* of the pad before reassembling them may help. if that works, it may be worth investing in some shims to fit in the piston bore because the lubricant will eventually get washed out and you'll have to do it all over again.

If in doubt though, where brakes are concerned, always get a competent mechanic to check them out first.

Hello again.

An update: The service replaced the two front braking pads and disks this morning with new ones although the old ones were not worn. They didn't charged me. They said that most probably the problem was coming from a material defect in the front left braking pad that was making the noise. In any way I drove for half an hour in the city after and I couldn't hear anything. I will wait for the recall letter to find out what this is about and let you know.

.

If they know there is a recall.........they will know what it is for, that is a stupid thing to tell you. It might be a software update for the flat Battery issue

I vaguely remember a few people had this when the Mk2 Prius came out; It was mostly attributed to the friction brakes not getting used hard enough because the heavy braking was mostly done by the regen. I guess kinda similar to how peoples rear disc brakes are always being flagged for being rusty due to them not braking hard enough regularly to scrub the rust off. IIRC there was an software update to tweak the regen vs friction brake balance which supposedly fixed or at least mitigated the issue tho'.
