Door Problem

Hiya All,

I've just been experiencing a weird problem with the passenger door.

When I use the key to enter, all the doors unlock but not the passenger door, I now have to do it manually from inside to lock and unlock the door - I've been reading a few notes and it seems to be the actuator that needs replacing - just wondered if any one here had the same problems as I don't want to replace the actuator if its something else .Also I assume its an MOT failure as well if its not done ?

Any ideas would be great

Cheers

I sometimes get a similar problem with my 1998 Mk1 Avensis - it happens more often in cold weather. I can tell winter is coming when it starts to happen. I've been putting up with it for several years. Mines never failed the MOT on it - I didn't think that they tested this at the MOT but I could be wrong.

difficult to say why it's not working, but first suspect would be the actuator or associated linkages. Not sure if it is operated by rod or cable - perhaps one of these has come astray?

Get an assistant to lock/unlock the door with the key and put your ear by the passenger door lock area. See if you can hear the actuator operating. If so, then it is likely to be a rod/cable gone. If you can't hear it operating then either a faulty actuator or dodgy electrical connection.

As for mot failure - as long as the manual lock control inside works and you can open and latch the door closed from inside and out you should be fine.

Taken from here:

http://www.motester.co.uk/mot-information-for-motorists/mot-test-checks-list

MOT Test of Doors
  • Both front doors must be openable from the inside and outside and all doors must latch securely.
  • a passenger door must open from the outside using relevant control
  • All door hinges, catches and pillars to be assessed for door readily opening and closing, and security

Tailgates, bootlids etc.

All these items, including the tailboards and dropsides of trucks must be securable in the closed position.

Does the internal central locking switch work (to lock the door once you've manually unlocked it)?

Hi Gazza

Thanks for the reply.

The internal switch ( manual one ) does work , I can open and lock the passenger door from inside.
