Having to pump the brake pedal to increase pressure can be caused by a number of things.

  • First thing to check is that the brake fluid isn't ancient, if it's been there a long time it may have absorbed a lot of moisture and be a dirty grotty colour, rendering it next to useless. If that's the case, replacing it is the only option.
  • The system might also need bleeding to get rid of any air, was any work done on the brakes recently that might have introduced air? If not, and there's air in there you need to find out how it got in.
  • Could also be a fault in the master cylinder. That would need rebuilding or replacing and could be expensive so try replacing the fluid and bleeding the system first.
  • Warped rotors (disks) could also cause issues where the pads are pushed back into the bores, resulting in greater pedal movement required to take up the slack before any braking effort is seen.

I advise you get it to a garage as soon as possible, not necessarily a Toyota agent but you need that car looked at quickly - its dangerous.

Yeah i have recently changed all the brake pads and hand brake cables and a caliper aswell. I have done bleeding aswell to get rid of air

Brake oil was recently filled aswell

Still sounds like air to me. Did you bleed the entire system, (all four) or just the caliper you replaced? Also, if the fluid level in the reservoir dropped while bleeding, you may have sucked even more air into the system.

As a matter of interest, was the new caliper the right one? It has to be matched to the rest of the system, if the new caliper's bore is larger than the original, it'll need more fluid to operate it and the master cylinder may not be big enough to supply it. The caliper also needs to be on the correct side, the bleed screw should be at the top.

This is the second car you have problems with the brakes and the third fault reported at the same time this morning, you are either incredibly unlucky or you should not be let loose on cars, my thoughts are the latter.

The motor trade gets a bad name but come on......anyone can mess about with cars and change critical parts, only to come on a forum and look for answers when it all goes wrong

You need to have these cars looked at professionally and hang up your spanners without delay

Rant over but I do smell troll in the air..............

Do you use a pressure bleeding kit? Pumping the pedal does not always work.

As said before, get professional assistance to check the brakes.

I have done brakes a few times, and won't let the car on the road if there is an issue.

Not messing with my or any bodies life!

I thought it quite ironic that the first time I read this thread there was an advert with reference to funeral costs at the end!

If you having to pump brakes before they work, then those vital parts of a second (or more) could be the time it takes for you to hit and seriously injure someone, even yourself, or even kill someone.

Do you really want that responsibility on your shoulders, and just think if the worst did happen - what would your life be like (assuming you survive a crash)

Get it sorted, and as you havnt sorted it then seek professional help.

I bought some rotors off of eBay and they were pretty cheap, they warped after a few months, then I found LUK !Removed! Brake rotors on sports brake rotors and I have couldn’t be happier. I got a set of BLACK XD Brakes and installed them on my Toyota Yaris and they're simply amazing.
