I'm Almost Embarrassed To Ask, But.....

When I collected the car, there was an ashtray in a plastic bag, but I can't find where it's supposed to fit in the car.

I don't smoke, but thought it would do to hold loose change and stuff.

It is shaped like a small beaker with a flip up lid and is too small a diameter and too low to fit snugly in the twin centre console area, or in the door pocket.

I just know the answer is going to be really obvious, but where is it designed to go ?

I like to think it is as that's where my pot sits for change at the petrol station

Is the cup holder placed forward of the armrest and rear of the gear lever ?

If so, that was the first place I tried it, but it was such a poor fit, I convinced myself it was designed to fit somewhere else, or even in another car !

Its a 2014 Auris Touring Sports. According to page 381 of the owners manual, the ashtray goes into one of the two front cup holders next to the handbrake - the manual pictures the ashtray in the front-most cup holder, but presumably it will fit in either of the front or rear ones.

Mine fits in the cup holder on the dashboard under the side vents... When I picked up my car the sales rep said the Japanese don't put cigarette ashtrays in cars anymore. Just the lighters. So to appease the ret of the world you get a cup holder/ashtray....... How true this is I don't know.....

Thanks for all your replies.

The forward cup holder is where I tried it first and as I said earlier, the fit is so poor it rattles and wobbles around in the space, which is why I thought I was missing something obvious.

I think I'll resign it to a garage drawer and keep my change in my pocket.

That's where they go, and yes it is a rubbish fit

The block that separates the two cup holders can be pulled out and re-inserted in 3 positions allowing you to reduce one at the same time as increasing the other cup holder dimensions. It is still not a great fit but does at least hold the ashtray/knick-knack pot firmly.
