Intermittent Noise - Avensis D4D 2008

Does anyone have any idea what this intermittent noise may be on my 2008 D4D Avensis hatchback?

It's a sort of whine/rumble and seems to be coming from the transmission somewhere.

It doesn't matter what gear I am in, or what the engine speed is - only what speed the car is travelling at.

Sounds a bit like one of the diffs did on a car of mine many years ago! (Just before it broke)

The sound comes and goes at will and I cannot do anything specific to recreate it.

As you would expect, it's never there when I visit my Toyota garage!

Car has now covered 48K with no other problems, but this is a constant "niggle" that makes me not want to fully trust the car on a long journey.

Any help/advice/ideas gratefully accepted.

Thanks for the info, but in this case, the noise is definitely coming from the transmission.

Maybe I should have tried to describe the noise better - It's more of a rumble/drone rather than a whine.

As described, it is speed dependant and varies with the speed of the car.

It comes and goes on it's own accord, no way to predict it!
