Changing The Coolant Without Blowing The Fusible Link This Time.

It was time to change the coolant as it is nearly 2 years since the last change. The last time I did the change, I blew the 100 amp fusible link by shorting against the alternator when trying to undo the engine block drain plug.

The story is in the following link plus photos of changing the fusible link: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/139794-alternator-100-amp-fuse-1998-t22/

This time I simply disconnected the Battery. No big sparks this time. I had a power bar to undo the engine drain plug.

It is essential to opened the block drain after undoing the radiator plug, as only part of the cooling system was drained. Then quite a lot more coolant is drained. I tested the old coolant and it could just about do -5. Lucky last winter was very mild!

Previously I have had to mix the coolant/antifreeze close to 50% with water. This year I just used pre-mixed coolant.

I checked the water pump, which was replaced 3 years ago and all is well. Car is ready for winter.
