Stinking Aircon

Hi I have a 60 plate 2.2 tspritit estate (T27) 80,000 miles

My aircon has begun to smell funny, a foisty, damp kinda smell

Am i right in thinking that Toyota should sort this for me free of charge as the car if less than 5 years old? if so will it matter that i have private plates on it that no longer show the age?

Anyone had this before? and knows what it is? its not unbearable but its not right

hi mate it could be just the pollen filter if yours is the same as mine petrol t2 1.8 its behind the glovebox

The private plates does not matter. The car is still 5 years old, and the dealers can go by chassis number. Go to EuroCar Parts and type in your plate number. I bet it will respond with the make and model of your car.

I am not sure if the dealer will sort your air-con for free.

Has the cab filter be changed at all? When I inspect mine, I also clean the vents and check the inlet to remove debris.

There are sprays and disinfectors for the vent system.

your car is 4 years old,have you ever had an aircon service (recommended every 2 years)? Do you use the aircon regularly? As above it could be the pollen filter.

I don't think that Toyota will fix it for free but an aircon service is usually ~£39 at my local Mr.T.

The system in my Prius used to smell bad for a while if I hadn't used it for a few months - always cleared itself up after a few days, was probably just a bit of dampness.

Nowadays, with the Verso, I just leave it on all the time with the system set to auto. The effect on fuel consumption is negligible and it does a better job of keeping the screen clear if left to its own devices.

Something to be aware of is that not using your aircon for extended periods can result in stiff seals which then need to be replaced.

sorry for my ignorrance as im not a car person, io bought the car 2 months ago, its had the smell all the time, where is the cab filter?

for about a tenner Halfauld have a arosol that you put in your car, air-con on shut the out side vent with engine running, set the canister away, close door till all is discharge, should get rid of smell and clean the system

This isn't uncommon on Toyota's, and like said Halfords or car shops in general sell 'bombs' you let off inside the car. You have to wind all the windows up and put the controls onto recirculate. Let off the 'bomb' and once off it carries on until empty and keep recirculating disinfected air around the car and killing the germs in the air con pipes. As mentioned you will probably need to change the pollen filter as it will probably be grey and not white. I also redid mine once more as it needed it and occasionally i spray a Dettol disinfectant into the air con vents to kill the germs as it is the germs you can smell. You need to use the air con and preferably keep the controls at 20 deg plus to stop the smell re-occuring. It may take a short while for the smell to go but as i said using the system helps make it smell normal again.......it is probably where the car has been sitting doing nothing why the germs have accumulated.

cheers guys, just bought an air con car bomb, do i have the air coming out of only the front? or windscreen/footwell/front combo?

As long as you have the recirculating button depressed so the light illuminates, windows up and internally have the controls set so that you disinfectant as much as the car as possible and leave it running for say 15 mins it should be ok. Just to let you know i had to do my car a couple of times and i still use a Dettol disinfectant spray occasionally but it doesn't smell bad at all now. The nasty niff isn't that good for you so getting rid of it can only be good for your health. Don't forget about the cabin filter, changing it i mean, they are not cheap, say £35 but you need to get the germs out of the system. Also don't forget once you have let the 'bomb' off you cannot stop it so place it where the spray droplets can be wiped off, either the front or rear footwells. Have fun!

If this is a 4 year old car & you have no history of it having an aircon service I suggest that after checking/changing the pollen filter & your aircon bomb you have the aircon serviced.
