2007 1.4 Vvti Oil Consumption

Hi,

Im new around here

Thinking about buying a

2007 1.4 VVti T3 Corolla.

Its got a full main dealer toyota service history, and I mean full.

Cars done 27k miles.

Looks absolutely immaculate.

Ive been doing a bit of research and it seems there is a problem with the 1.4 vvti engine using excessive oil due to a piston ring problem.

Is this a fault that covers the 2007 model year and how common is it?

The reason im looking at a corolla is because im after a car thats reliable, but is it a case of the Japanese bulletproof aspect is overplayed?

or should I be ok due to the service history etc.

The car is being sold with a 12 month warantee but i dont want to have to put a new engine in it in 13 months time

Many thanks for any advice

thats why I am looking at a toyota over the competitors.

This is a really nice car, it looks like its been owned by someone who has really looked after the car and hardly used it.

from what ive read online the oil consumption is caused by a manufacturing/design fault with the pistons and can be fixed by using a redesigned piston.

apparently these redesigned pistons were fitted to all cars after 2005. and so as a 2007 car, the one im looking at shouldnt be affected.

but I want to know for sure what im buying into before i lay down the cash on the table.

The latest fix point for excessive ZZ engine oil consumption was September 2005, so unless your Corolla was a very late registration then a 2007 car will be post counter measure

is there any way I can tell for absolute sure, apart from stripping the engine and checking the oil ways on the pistons!

The car is at a Volvo main dealers.

Could I call Toyota Uk or enquire at a toyota dealer quoting the reg or vin?

Im guessing neither will be particularly interested as they are not getting a sale out of it.

Toyota do say every Toyota will burn 1ltr of oil every 1000 mls. In the manual I have been told. I had a toyota gt starlet and it burned 1 ltr of oil goin from Dublin to wexford and back. In one day. Put it through the nct (mot) and passed on emmisions no prob. Was spotless. I heard the cat converter from Toyota's can handle oil. Unlike ahem. **coff**cof 'vw Audi ....after 100,000mls there tired unlike my gt starlet...had 200000 and still perfect!!!! Toyota---best built cars in the word!

Hi,

As said, the oil burning problem was overcome long ago, so why on earth do you think a 2007 car has that problem ..

Even if it had that type of oil burning problem, Toyota long ago said they would no longer do any such remedial work under warrany as it could just be old age /excessive wear.

If its being sold with a 12 month warranty, ( get details in writing) expect they will have done a mot on it so doubltless the engine will be running within specifications.

( a neighbour took her 9 month old Dacia to A. Clarke and they said it was an electrical fault and not covered by the warranty ! - see went ballistic)

Try and see the service book and which totota dealer did these and ring them and quote the reg number and say you are looking to buy it and wondered if it has had all /any recalls etc done.

My local mot tester said I want to hang on to mine as so many newers car, not just toyota are so full of electronics they cause so many problems /failures the old ones are so much more reliable.

If you are not confident about your thoughts on the car, get an AA / RAC type of inspection before buying.

Also have an HPI check done, though would expect a main del;aer would have done that and be able to show you thier report.

No mention of the price, don't let the low miles and condition blind you in to paying over the odds, its a 7 year old car a the end of the day and the price should refelect that.

Finally, assume you have taken it for a decent test drive, on a stretch where you can get up to 70.

Seem some folk will buy a car just from sitting in it in the car park, got a mate who buys £20/30k cars without ever driving one - couldn't believe it !
