Gen 7 Double Din Stereo Replacement And Recommendations?

Hoping for some advice here. My fathers gen 7 original Sony double din stereo has finally given up the ghost. The volume control is shot.

He'd like a similar kind of unit to fill the space, but I'm concerned that the volume control issue is a common problem with the wx-c570r unit.

I've had a quick look online, but most double din units seem way better spec'd and priced higher than he'd need or be able to justify. However, I've shown him the single din conversion unit + stereo bundle on eBay which can be picked up for £90 ish, and he didn't seem too keen with the look.

Anyone else on here replaced their original head unit? Are the single din conversion kits fairly simple to fit once the original stereo is removed? Any 'period' recommendations of a half decent double din unit which would fit in? Any ideas appreciated! Thanks
