Hi guys, can anyone please tell me what this cannister is, im havin a little issue with the revs blipping up a little inbetween changing gear and not sure if this has anything to do with it. Ive cleaned out the throttle body area, its better but still an issue.

Hi,

Its a carbon/charcoal filter part of the EVAP system for the petrol vapours from the fuel tank that are stored there until burnt off by the running engine.

There a full page detailing it in the Haynes manual, though not sure a fault like yours would be attributed to it, errors caused by a fault in the Evap system are described as poor idle, stalling etc.

Old cogger, would this flag a fault in the ecu?

John, did you remove the throttle and strip out the idle control valve to clean that?

The idle control valve is located on the botton of the throttle, and will require removal of the throttle. Also bear in mind that the cooling system is also connected to the throttle, and these pipes will require clamping before removal.

Hi mcorban.

I have a 2004 1.4 Corolla E12 and have the same rise in revs between gear changes. I believe this to be standard and that it is a way of ensuring fuel from the manifold is thoroughly burnt off to get the emissions as low as possible (I have seen this mentioned a few times on the web).

Whilst I do find that fast gear changes are greeted with the grinding of the gears (I have to release throttle, dip clutch and wait a mo' before I can change gear smoothly), I also find that normal driving the gear change is so much smoother.

I can't say for definite that this is the same for your 'Rolla, but it is a possibility.

Do you also find that when the engine is warm and you're at a standstill, if you raise the revs slightly and release the throttle, the revs stay up for a second or two?

Did the car do this from when you bought it, or is it something that has developed over time?

Cheers

Stu

I had similar types of issues to what you list other than the gearchange grinding issue (which ended up being a clutch release bearing)

What i ended up doing was stripping out the throttle/butterfly assembly, and cleaned it, inc the idle control valve which is situated on the bottom of the throttle. The car revs will rise a bit anyway as you change gear, but not much in fairness.

What can help is to disconnect the Battery for about ten minutes. This will reset the ecu back to factory settings. When reconnected drive the car as normal.

My car was initially burning alot of oil. I ended up changing the engine, and install one from an 2006.

I did notice after the engine change, my car smooth out when i changed the cat (i had engine management light on for that issue)
