Thermostat Housing?

Hi,

New here and looking for some advice straight away lol

We have a 2000 1.8 vvti (86K) which we love to bits but is now starting to have all the common problems, oil consumption is starting to go up and now an over heating problem.

The overheating is def not the head gasket and I have changed the thermostat today, what I want to know is, does the thermostat housing require a gasket?? When I took it off there was no gasket on it which I thought was odd but the thermostat has a seal on it? after refitting it all it was leaking like mad from the housing.

This kind of makes sense as we were losing coolant but couldn't figure out where it was going before I changed it today, maybe the leak was small and I have made it worse? No heat in car either so that would be explained by coolant loss. TBH I have now had enough and will be selling the car once I sort the over heating issue.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Stephen

The usual culprit for coolant leaks, is the bottom corner of the radiator, but might be the water pump gasket.

New rads are available for peanuts on eBay.

+ 1 for above....most likely cause is the rad (Bottom corner, driver's side)...less than £30 off the bay.

Just make sure you follow the instructions that you'll find on a label on the underside of the bonnet.!!

You have to make absolutely sure you haven't got any air locks.

Thanks for the replies chaps,

The leak is coming from the thermostat housing, as I mentioned above the housing did not have a gasket on it when I replaced the thermostat! I just wanted to know if it is supposed to have one or if it is self sealing?

Cheers

PM me your reg and I will check, or phone your Toyota parts department.

with water pumps and thermostat housing I use a waterproof silicone(instant gasket) along with a new gasket for that extra seal.

its like a rubber o ring that goes around the metal of the thermostat, there is no metal gasket.

Cheers,

Now looking at that I know the thermostat already has a seal on it? Mmmm maybe a crappy quality thermostat!

Finally having another go at my little leaking problem, I haven't got the old thermostat to hand but the new one does not sit in tight and its definitely the right stat! Is the rubber gasket/o ring on the thermostat supposed to sit tight in the hole or does the housing hold it in place?
