Power-Assisted Steering...why Are There 2 Reservoirs?

Hi - I think I've got a problem with the PAS (Avensis Verso, 2002). I noticed the steering getting stiffer and a pool of liquid under the engine.

Then I checked the PAS reservoirs...looks like there are 2 of them but I don't know why.

Anyway, in the picture the right reservoir (white one) is on the MIN mark and the left reservoir is empty.

Why are there 2 reservoirs? Presumably both these are for power steering, although only the one on the left is labelled as 'power steering' on the cap.

I'm not very mechanically-minded. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Maz

The reservoir to the right is your brake fluid which looks well past it's replacement point it should be a nice clear yellow not dark brown.

You should be able to use DOT 4 or 5.1 but check on the net. Opie Oils do a recommendation page! So do Mobil and Shell. I used Motul 660 factory line (DOT4) in mine. Over kill I know! But bought it right cheap! So what the Hell :)

So a mechanic friend of mine had a look under the car and suggested that I fill the PAS reservoir, start the engine, turn the wheel and look out for any leaks under the car. Cause might be a split pipeline. Can anyone suggest which fluid to buy and where from? Thanks again.

So i bought this power steering fluid below (told the assistant my year/model of car)...

To find out where the leak is, When I fill the reservoir and look under the car for the leak, should I have

Engine off?

Engine on?

Engine on and in gear?

Can anyone suggest the steps I need to take?

Thanks

Engine running, not in gear, and turn steering lock to lock.

Don't fill it while running.

So i've managed to find where the leaks coming from.

For the repair, though, i need to take it to the garage.

will the car be ok driven with reservoir filled, even though it will leak on the way to the garage?

yes, as long as it doesn't run dry getting there.
