Strange Noise At Idle

The other day i was sat in the car at idle and thought it sounded a bit rough and quite noisy but the moment i put the clutch all the way in any excessive noise or vibration just stopped. This doesn't happen all the time just now and again. My thought is that it may be clutch related or possibly the clutch release bearing only due to the fact it stopped when i pressed the clutch in??

same problem with mine, i ordered a new thrust bearing but then was told it was more than likley the flywheel, mines a 2006 t180 rav with 135k

It's not unusual for a release bearing to quieten down when pressing the clutch. It's probably worth leaving it until it gets worse or more persistent. If you're removing the gearbox to fit a new bearing then it's a no brainer to replace the clutch at the same time - particularly if the car is a high miler. The dual mass flywheel on the 4.3 isn't troublesome but may well be towards the end of it's life at 135K miles

Hmmm interesting advice. my mileage is at 112k so it may well be the case!! I actually have a years warranty so will check if is covered but mu gut feel is no. Failing that i will get my brother to get it up on the ramps and sort it for a few beers when he moves back from Oz

This isn't a quick or simple job - a couple of kegs of beer maybe! Worth checking the warranty - they usually only cover failure and often exclude clutch parts.

That was my thoughts that whatever way i looked at it the clutch will not be covered. I will keep an eye on it for now and see if it gets worse and then look to doing it in the not too distant future

Hi there,

I have exactly the same problem. There is a whining/rattling nose when on neutral and if I rev up the engine the noise kind of goes away, but the vibrations are there and most noticeable ~2000 RPM.

It also developed a vibration on 6th gear when running at ~1300 RPM with moderate load:

- if I completely release the accelerator the vibration goes away

- if I fully press depress the accelerator the vibration goes away

I have replaced the clutch (full kit - friction plate, pressure plate and thrust bearing), and the noise/vibration is still there.

I've made an experiment when driving at low speed - 10-20 km/h (6-12 mph) and depress the clutch pedal the noise does not disappear. It disappears only when the car is stopped and the pedal is depressed! This makes me thinking it has something to do with the gearbox's primary shaft bearings.

Can some of you who has similar issues try my little experiment and share the results/thoughts?

Hi

just wandering if you may have sorted this issue you have. Appreciate it’s a bit of an old post.

my car is showing the same symptoms you have described. When parked and engine is running it’s a annoying whining/humming noise and when I press the clutch it disappears. I’ve also noticed that it’s more apparent through the gears and gets louder but once I’m out of 4th and into 5th and 6th it stops.

I still have a few months left under warranty as I took out the extended warranty. My car is a 2006 T180 with 98K on the clock but with the new engine from Toyota the mileage on this engine is about 40K roughly
