Wheel Speed Sensor Problems

Hi all,

This is my first post so hello all.

I am trying to find out whether anyone has experienced the same fault as I have with my Yaris. It is a 61 plate and we purchased it in August last year. After 5 months it developed a fault with the rear nearside speed sensor. This had water in the connection between the wire and speed sensor. The fault was intermittent and when it occurred the steering went loose and the lights came on. The car went in several times before they found the fault. Thyey said it could have occured due to the steering model which had a recall. They kept the car for 8 weeks as parts were ex stock and put us in a hire car.

The fault reoccurred last week. When we took the car back to Toyota in Basingstoke they inspected it and found water in the same connector. They replaced both the sensor, hub assembly and cable last time and they have done the same again.

They now want us to take the car back however we want rid of the car as we feel it is a huge safety risk when the fault occurs.

I don't know where we stand legally. My problem is that something happens to the steering/brakes when the fault occurs which puts us and others on the road at risk.

Has anyone else experienced this? Seems strange that its happened twice in 6 months on the same corner of the car. Almost as if its a design fault with the sealing of the connector.

Hello David - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

Having done a search of the forums, wheel speed sensors don't appear to be a common problem on the 3rd generation Yaris.

I too have looked all over the internet and cannot find anything on them. The garage was concerned and raised it with "fix it right", one of their technical services. But they came back and just said to replace it again. They are sending the old cable and hub back to Toyota to see if they can find out how the water got in.
