Yaris Recall

Hi All,

Just to let people know, I booked my car in today to my local Toyota Garage to have the Radio/DVD player fixed, and was told that there is an outstanding recall on the car. (Mk2 2011 1.4D Manual)

The recall is about a week old, and is not yet in the public domain, but you can check on the Toyota website: http://www.toyota.co.uk/owners-info/recall-checker

They were a bit vague on details, because it is a very new issue, but said it is related to the ECU and air intake.

All effected owners should receive a letter in the next 6 weeks.

I will update with more info, when I have any.

Thanks for that Andrew

Its interesting because the wife 58 plate 1.4D is still due for the last 2 recalls but my 59 plate 1.4D was up to date (but not now).

We don't know exactly which models, years, etc are covered by the recall - so if yours isn't affected by the recall, it presumably it will still be up to date.

I was told by Toyota, that the recall is only about a week old.

Therefore, vehicles could be affected, even if recently serviced or previously up to date.

Best check with Toyota to be sure.

There have been a number of recalls, always use the recall checker on the Toyota website, this checks the VIN number against the master database that Toyota hold

Provided your vehicle and keeper details are up to date with DVLA, one should get a recall letter if yours is amongst those vehicles affected.

This is a well known recall and affects Some Mk1 Yaris, MK2 Avensis, Avensis Verso & Corolla, its has nothing to do with the recall on MK2 Yaris D4d which as mentioned above has only just been launched.

Much better to check here: http://www.toyota.co.uk/owners-info/recall-checker then to rely on inaccurate information taken from the web written for the US market

Well my wife has finally received notification from Toyota that her car will be subject to the recall (something to do with engine oil leaking internally and being a fire risk). Local Toyota dealer will handle the recalls and as my wife is a driving instructor have said they will prioritise her due to her having tests booked.

They do seem to be dragging their heels though

The latest recall is reference R/2014/160 and the recall began on 7th January 2015. The recall affects the Auris, Yaris, Urban Cruiser, IQ and Corolla built between 13/11/2008 and 13/09/2013.

Description: Oil may accumulate in the turbo charger and, in certain circumstances, flow into the combustion chamber. This may cause engine damage. In extreme cases oil can be ejected from the engine and if it comes in contact with an ignition source may result in a fire.

Remedial action: Depending on vehicle diagnosis, modify intercooler layout to improve air flow; upgrade ECU software; upgrade turbo charger and/or vacuum pump.

As regards DVSA and Toyota dragging their feet, the recall was only announced this week, and Toyota will be relying on DVSA getting owner information from DVLA in order to contact owners.. So if you've had notification from Toyota about a recall that was announced two days ago, I think they've done quite well, and don't forget the recall notification process will have been affected by a delay due to the Christmas/New Year break.

Use Toyota's recall checker to see whether your car is affected - http://www.toyota.co.uk/owners-info/recall-checker

Thanks for the info.

When I spoke with Toyota, they said it was a voluntary minor software update, however it doesn't sound that like it from your description. It sounds quite serious.

I have had my car booked in and rescheduled with the local dealer 3 times, because they are still awaiting information on what needs doing. It is a little worrying.

Any ideas what the actual fix is to the non mechanically minded?

i.e. What will they actually do? Will they replace parts?

How do I know if my car has been damaged? and if it has are Toyota liable to fix and resolve?

Am I safe to continue using my car?

The information I have posted is taken directly from the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency website. The description of the fault would be the worst case scenario - bit like reading the information leaflet supplied with medication where all possible side effects are described. I would imagine that most owners will have relatively minor work done to their cars. I would also say that you are safe to continue driving your car.

Got my recall notice today, 59 teg Yaris 1.4D.

From Frostyballs info the wifes 58 plate was registered (therefore built) before the start date for the recalls.

The wifes still behind on 3 recalls and mine behind by 1.

We received our Toyota Yaris 2009 recall last week.

But it appears it has been too late for the car.

On 2nd Jan while driving, the Car Engine had some sort to internal explosion and everything inside the engine is in bits. The RAC guy came to rescue the car never seen such problem. We were wondering what to do with the car. Its only 5 years old car.

Now we have this recall and the symptoms matches with the way our car engine broke down.

I contacted Toyota head office and our local dealership and have made an appointment with them to check the car engine if the failure was recall related fault.

I get the feeling Toyota dealership will probably find a way to wriggle out and not fix the problem for us.

Can anyone advise me how to proceed and what to do?

About a week before we received the recall letter, our Yaris engine had some sort of internal explosion which appear to have made a hole at the side of the engine. I am waiting to see what Toyota dealership says. They probably find a way to avoid taking responsibility.

Would be interested to know what they say and do.

I spoke with my local garage today, and they are still awaiting guidance from Toyota Head Office, as to what needs to be done.

Apparently, they are aware of the issue, but have no procedure to follow yet.

Hi stevecrvn

Do you have any feedback you can provide on your recall?

Has anybody had the recall work carried out yet on their vehicle?

Would you care to share the experience, what they did and how long it took?

Mine is booked in for next week.

There are many various possibilities as to what is needed for each recall. There is a checking process which takes half an hour, and depending on what is found, you might just need an ECU re-flash (which is what mine needed today) I have a 1.4 Auris

Some vehicles will require further work depending on what is found on the inspection. The technical bulletins and Technician information has only just been released, so dealers will only just be able to start booking jobs in

Kingo

Not sure what you mean by oil Problem, the recall is to stop oil collecting in the intercooler which can be drawn into the engine and possibly cause the engine to " run away" ( rev uncontrollably until it destroys itself ) the recall can include upto 4 repairs depending on age :

1. Modified Vacuum pump

2. Modified Turbo charger

3. Modified Intercooler setup

4. Engine ECU update on DPF fitted cars

The newer the car the less work is required and Toyota have now set what level of repair could be required for each car. All repairs should be completed in one visit and cars should not be returned without all the repairs being completed.

My car has been in today for the recall.

It has had the ECU updated, but needs to go back next week to have a new Intercooler and Intercooler pipe fitted.
