Only changed it 6 months and 2k miles ago but what came out last time was treacle.

What spec oil is recommended for a 1998 petrol Rav4?

Ill probably change the brake fluid too; what spec do I need.

Ill probable use a Tesco or Asda oil because Im doing regular changes until the engine is clean.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Jonathon, the book states eng oil

APH grade SH "Energy-Conserving II" or SJ,Energy-Conserving" multigrade engine oil or ILSAC multigrade engine oil.

Viscosity (SAE) generally 0W-30 or for lower temperatures 5W-30

Brake fluid SAE J1703 or FMVSS No 116 DOT 3.

Thank You.

Im guessing I cannot use 10-40 then?

I was going to get enough of one oil to do my Rover 75 CDTi and the Rav.

Bear in mind that API SH and SJ will have been superceded - now either SL, SM or SN (latest). Either of these later three will be OK.
