Yaris 1.4 Very Sluggish Help Please

Hi everyone, I brought a 1.4 Yaris d4d on a 02 plate, I have had the car fully serviced and even had the ejr valve cleaned, but the car takes to long to pick speed up especially second gear it feels has thou something blocking it and after about 5 seconds then it kicks in. The other day I took it on mortway and was doing about 75 the car in front braked so I had to slow down but it took me a long time to build my speed up again had to go into the first lane can anyone help thanks

Failing the EGR valve/blocked inlet manifold, check ALL hoses which conduct air/vacuum..

(hint they are cold/cool when the radiator is HOT). :look for splits/ loose connections..

Yeah, check the throttle body as described in the post that Fishy mentions above; The EGR valce on the Yaris D4D's isn't that prone to seizing up, but the throttle body (Attached to the intercooler (The radiator thingy in the black plastic surround) via a short thick pipe) is VERY prone to blocking up the small hole that leads to (I think) the EGR.

Another thing worth doing, esp. if the car is pretty old and/or it hasn't been done, is the Fuel Filter. According to the manual it should be changed every 4 years/60,000 miles but for some reason it didn't appear in the normal Toyota service schedule at my local Jemca Mr T (I had a small argument with them, where they said it didn't need to be changed and anyway it was in the fuel tank so it'd cost a lot - It turns out this is a load of cobblers as the diesel fuel filter is easily accessible in the engine bay! In the end I bought the part myself and, fitted it with some help and guidance from here :))

Unlike the petrol VVTIs, the diesel fuel filter is quite easy to change, although can be quite messy...!

Finally, it might be worth opening the bonnet and getting a mate to rev the engine - See if you can hear the turbo whistle/spinning up. If that has a problem you will get a noticeable power loss. However that's usually accompanied by a very smokey exhaust, esp. above 2000rpm, and if you aren't getting that it's less likely...

Thanks guys would check that on the weekend, sorry to bug u but what do u recommend for diesel treatment, was thinking to fill it up with v power Shell diesel and add done treatment to it, once again thanks guys

If you think it's the injectors, what I tend to do is fill up with V-Power diesel then go for a massive hoon on the motorway to get the engine nice and hot to burn off any crap in the engine.

(I have discovered Wales is also a good place for this - Sweet mother, the HILLS!!! :eek:)

As you are in Yorkshire, find a nice long steepish hill with no corners or speed limits.. and drive up it fast. Preferably in a lower gear at around 4,000 rpm.

As Cyker says, it will heat up the engine and turbo quickly and burn off any carp. V Power Nitro is a good idea as well as is an injector cleaner.. A few trips up should clear it out - a bit...

Mine did the same few years ago I did very thing to it but it did not cure it so I bought a 60 plate instead and it's a lot faster. My garage owner was a Toyota service manger now he runs his own he told me the 02 plate 1.4 d4d engines all had this problem. Mine was a 02 plate black yaris 1.4 d4d I loved it.

Sorry for late reply, finally got some time off work so decided to try the above advise. I took the ejr valve to clean and also the throttle body I realised that the hole from the throttle body to the ejr valve was totally blocked so I cleaned it out with a carb cleaner, then built it all back up again, I filled car with v power deasel and gave it good run. The outcome it has improved slightly but still lacking power so decided to take to my friends garage to scan it even thou no engine warning light is on the following fault code appeared P2237 oxygen sensor pumping current circuit/open ( A/F sensor) (bank 1 sensor 1) we tried re setting it didn't work has anyone any idea of this fault please
