High Transfer Case Oil Temp

Hi,

Found a topic where you guys comment on a dash error "high transfer case oil temp." for RAV4 2.2 D4-D 136hp, 2006-2012 (mine is 2008).

I started having this issue 3 days ago - while driving at 60km/h on a dry road at -5C temp heard a beep and a warning.

After some time "Check 4WD system" was displayed. Every time I turn the engine off, the error disappears from the dash, after driving above 40-60km/h it shows "high transfer case oil temp" and soon again - "check 4WD".

Went to Toyota dealer yesterday and they read error C1299 (I read about it here:

. First told me I was driving under extreme conditions, but I managed to return them the car in 2 minutes with the error on the dash. Then they spent 2 hours to tell me it is 95% a 4WD computer for replacement. The oil was replaced 1y ago in Toyota dealer and the tires are brand new (<30 days). (I mention the tires because one problem could be if there is detected 3% difference in the rotation speed which could make the 4WD system to turn on too often)

I found such computer from another car just to try out - and guess what - same behaviour, with the same error. So I believe it is too unlikely to be the computer but the dealer says their DB says so.

Problem solved!

Provided the large audience, it is little disappointing that no one replied.

However, the reason is quite illogical if you follow the Toyota workflow for troubleshooting and read the error code stored in the computer (C1299).

The ABS sensors were OK but the wheel bearing hub (43550-42020) was giving false input for the rotational speed - and nothing in the error speaks about that.

The wheel bearing itself has an integrated magnetic ring

The wheel bearing was a brand new Blue Print (50 days old) and did not cause trouble in the beginning. However replaced it now with SKF and no more errors on the dash.

I'm getting similar problem  did you change all the wheel bearings?
