Toyota Avensis 52 Plate 1.8 Manual Gear Box Oil (Uk Car)

Hi,

Car has done 102k and the gearbox sounds like it whines.

If the car is parked with the nearside wheels towards the kerb on a cambered road and then I drive it is quiet, so I suspect the oil needs topping up....

I have not seen any leaks though.

What oil do I need to top it up?

Thanks

Look in your owners manual or ring your local Toyota parts department too see how much you need and what grade.

i'll have a look in the manual, ta :)

stealers are not usually very helpful I find, they tell you it's a specialist item that costs a fortune (well that's the experience I had with a 2002 Nissan primera!)

I would change the fluid completely.

The capacity is 1.9 litres, and the original spec is Hypoid 75W/90 or equivalent.

The easy bit (for me), is changing the fluid, especially if you have the right tools. Try and have a suitable container to capture the old fluid and check how much drained out and how dirty it is.

I hope the whine is to do with the fluid and nothing more sinister.

Thank you for advising! Useful to know.

It's an old car. I don't want to go throwing stupid amounts of money on genuine oil.

As you say, hopefully it's nothing sinister.

The car was passed onto me from my father, so it doesn't owe me anything except an exhaust sensor, coils and general service/tyres.

what size socket will I need?

I would like to attempt this soon.

The drain and filler plugs are 24mm. Best to use a braker bar if you have one as both need some leverage to tackle. Access is good once the nearside engine bay guard is removed. You'll need the front on axle stands. But remember the car needs to be level for the final fill. Refilling a 500ml 'sqeeze carton' with a nozzle a few times is the easiest way to refill. This can be done from above or below.

Remove the filler plug first before drain plug, if you drain oil first then cannot undo filler plug your stuffed! I would'nt skimp on oil quality either.

Yeh, good planning never does any harm, for sure! I suspect a top up is all I'll need. I don't plan on keeping the car long term. But I got total branded oil so it should be good stuff. Ty again :)

At that mileage I would change it anyway, if you are having to top it up have peace of mind and change it then you will know for sure if you have a box problem or not but suspect you might find it transforms the box. I have also added 'Slick 50' g/box additive to all my boxes (auto as well) and have also done all my engines for the past 30yrs. at 15k (5k changes)

Check with your finger the level of oil. If you need a good top up, most probably there is a leak somewhere. Otherwise just change it.

Can I add that my front drive is raised well over a foot, so there is a gap to the house. So when I drive the car nose in (normally reverse back), there is plenty of room for the over hang.

This makes oil changes and access to the gearbox drain and filler plug easier.

The Mk1 undershield does not hinder the draining of either engine or gearbox oils.

Everything else Gazza mentions are correct.
