New (Old) Yaris Owner, Timing Chain?

Going to pick up my new (to me) Yaris tomorrow and wanted to check something. It's a 99 1.0 GLS that's done 115k and I wondered, if it hasn't already had the cam chain changed is it worth doing asap?

When I took it for a spin the engine was really smooth and quiet with no noticeable rattling when it was at a stand but I'm not sure what people recommend with regards to this??

Only supposed to be a cheap runabout to get me to work and back but I'm already planning what to do with it!

The chain should last the lifetime of the engine so you shouldn't need to change it. If it's a bit rattly, may need a new tensioner, but that's usually it.

That said, does the car have a full service history?

The main downside of the chaincam is that it needs regular oil changes to keep it in good health. If the previous owner(s) have skipped oil changes, the chain can be weakened.

That's a bit more important for the diesel than the petrol tho'. (One thing I've never gotten used to is how the oil in my diesel Yaris will go from honey to black just driving it back from its service to my house! :lol:)

As above, they are usually OK for the lifetime of the car, however, poor quality oils and missed services can cause irreversible damage. If it rattles, change it. I have seen a few older cars with the chain snapped, it is generally terminal :eek:

Will have a look when I get it home, only cost £500 so I'm happy to change it for piece of mind if needs be. Had a quick look round it and doesn't look like too much hassle to get to anyway, especially compared to my C-Max!

The book time is 3.6 hours, so not a 5 minute job as such. Not a lot of room down the side of that engine

It's a job and a half if you have never done it before.

Removal of engine mounting and locking of crankshaft pulley being main issues. (No need to remove the sump despite Haynes saying so..).

And it is likely that the tensioner is failing as well as the chain... Parts costs are c £180 iirc..(5 years ago).

New chain and tensioners are only £62 now so worth doing at that price! With any luck though it might have been done....

I would not pay £62 for a cheap redesigned non standrad system which can go pop at any time..Especially the hassle o sorting it out.

If you decide to change it......Stick to original make parts as opposed to aftermarket copies :)
