Hi everybody,

I have Toyota Avensis D4D 2003 estate. Out of nowhere I lost sound on my radio/CD. Radio has power, shows stations, cd shows songs and it is playing but...no sound is coming out. Just started my car and it's gone, sound that is. The day before everything worked perfectly. Any clues?

Blown Sound output chip int he stereo. You might have a duff speaker or speaker wiring, this will have to be sorted before refitting radio.

Is there a way to check the sound output chip without actually buying another radio unit? Wiring is all right...Hate to buy another one without figuring out the actual problem... Display works fine but radio and cd is dead silent not even any noise coming out of the Speakers..

The only thing you could do is send it to a radio repair shop.

If the chip is blown it could be a speaker fault, any of them crackling before it died?

Also if the chip is gone there may be other components taken out in the process.

I can't think offhand of the part number.

No there was no crackling or any other problems even the slightest ones.. It just one minute fully working next - no sound... Interesting thing that it's not only the sound gone but even on the display it doesn't show when you are trying to change the volume like it would normally show Vol 30 and up and down but now when you try to turn volume up or down the display just doesn't react. Shows everything else but nothing that concerns volume it's as if this feature was never there :) I think I'll just try to buy a second hand radio unit and hope for the best...

With this extra info, this helps determine the issue a bit easier.

These radios had a tendency for the rotary volume knob to fail.

This would also be a cheaper fix potentially.

Sometimes the front face can work loose.

Either way removal will be required.

This video should help

Would that also affect volume control buttons on a steering wheel?

possibly, but can't say for sure, as i have only ever worked on them on a bench, rather than in car.

If you go for a replacement, ensure that it is the correct model, as they changed the steering wheel control communications around this time.

Thank you for your replies. As of yesterday the sound in my radio appeared as of nowhere...Just played with some buttons while waiting in a car for my kids and it started playing again. It's weird I'm guessing at this point maybe contacts somewhere could be to blame although we had radio taken out and inspected all the wiring and still there was no volume for couple of days. So there it is. Volume is back meaning no need to change radio unit :)

Thank you Mike for all your help ;)

Brigita,

It sounds like a bad connection on the face of your stereo.

But as it's working leave well alone.

If it does fail, it wouldn't be too expensive to repair.
