Clutch Replacement Cost - Surprise ?

Just been making a couple of phone calls for a new clutch and both a local clutch specialist and a national clutch centre both quoted between £200 - £300, specifying a decent brand named clutch assemblies like Blueprint etc

Was a bit taken back as you often read posts about Totyota costing £800 + etc etc.

Thought they might be cheap quotes becuase I would get caught out on expensive 'extras' like flywheel skimming or oil seals, but both said unlikely to be needed but can skim on site for a small fee and oil seals simply not known to be needed on a late Rolla.

Can anyone else say what they have been paying for a new clutch, just that knowing the retail price of the parts and it being a big job to get to the clutch wondered if the price sounds too good to be true ?

Well what do ya know. I'm going in for a new clutch on monday morning. I have been quoted a huge range of figures from £190 labour - to £780 fitted. What I have done is buy a blueprint clutch kit (ADT330111) from Amazon - £69 (free delivery) and being charged £215 labour (inc VAT). So that's £284 all in. Have you experienced any judder with your old clutch?

I'm looking forward to getting it done, so I've been cleaning the new pressure plate with brake cleaner to clean off the film protection. We've been getting to know each other, because come Tuesday, the clutch and I are never gonna see each other again. haha HOPEFULLY!!

I'm getting the odd slippage when putting some real power on and the bite point is very high on the pedal, so its an early reminder to get it changed.

Generally don't get any judder, though after a long drive, couple of hours, and then some slow town driving I can get a bit of judder in 1st or 2nd, though that might be more down to my foot being a bit tired.

There was a post last year where one guy said he had his clutch changed but the judder was still there and that he found the aux belt tensioner joints were badly worn and when replaced cured the judder.

Must confess I was surprised such a thing could cause clutch judder, but did check my tensioner the other month when I replaced the belt, there was perhaps 0.5mm play, whereas he was talking about 4-6mm if I remember correctly.

How many miles have you done and is judder your real problem ?

Not aimed at you, so please don't take offense, but like similar posts, always a bit surprised when folk buy their own parts for the garage to fit, would it be dearer if the garage supplied the same parts or is it that you don't trust them to use 'genuine' parts ?

Could understand if it was being done by a friendly mechanic on the qt, but if you are being charged vat its clearly a proper job / garage, though are not they a bit disapproving if you do so ?

Do you mind me asking where you got that quote? I'm going to be needing a clutch soon and so far the quotes i've got locally are a fair bit more than your quote.

One was a local clutch and gearbox specialist garage , expect you will find some in your area with a simple web search.

Heres the first I found from looking in your area http://www.clutchmanchester.co.uk/

The other was the chain Mr Clutch at £295, seems they have branches in Manchester and Southport.

Expect your Tsport will be a bit more expensive in parts and labour than my little 1.6

The specialist garage gave me he option of which parts they use, budget or quality etc.

If you watch some of the ytube time lapse vids on how a Rolla clutch is replaced you soon see how its well worth paying for.
