Temperature Gauge Problem

I have a 2002 Toyota avensis vvti 1.6 .recently the temperature gauge on the dash is staying half way dosent move even when car is off .also there is a engine light that comes on after a while and sometimes doesn't .I can't find the problem .any help appreciated

That's Check Engine light. Diagnostic tool can give you the answer! Probably the temp. sensor?

Could the needle be sticking?

Tap the instrument cowl and see does it drop.

I also had this problem this morning but the engine light didnt come on.  Apparently on buying the car it was sitting in the garage for a year
