Hello All

Needing to replace seal (or silicone) around rear tail light due to water in the boot just have a quick question I can see the two nuts to remove but there are also 2 pale blue plastic caps which look like they also hold the light cluster on do these need to be removed if so how? without breaking them

Thanks for any help

Hi,

I used a small ring spanner pushed down over these fasteners. You need to squeeze the sides of them together so they pop through the bodywork and free off the lamp cluster

Are you sure that it's the light seal? I suspected the same on mine but it was actually the air vent hatch which is lower than the rear light (same level as rear bumper).

Not 100% sure, I saw evidence of a couple of beads of water running down from the bottom of the light cluster inside (the leak is quite small at the moment) onto the top of the vent and boot floor so I am assuming if its the vent it would not throw water upwards? A light seal from toyota is £14 so will try that first.

It was definitely the light seal on mine. It tried sealing round the vent and it made no difference, but silicone behind and round the light cluster stopped the water getting in.

I think you can get a clue from what conditions let the water in worst. On mine it let loads of water in when parked in heavy rain but little or none when the car was actually being driven in heavy rain. That suggests a light seal, which is what it turned out to be.

If you have water coming in more when being driven, but not when parked I would be more inclined to suspect the vent seal, due to its location under the bumper.

Also noticed a bit of water on the plastic bulb housing bar as well, as i posted earlier its only £14 for light seal so will start with that first and see what happens

Great to see this topic. Need to fix this in mine too. What type of sealent do I need? I'm 99 per cent sure it's the light seal that's letting in water.

You need to buy the seal from Toyota. Here's one from different model but you get the idea:

I had a leaking vent on an Avensis and it threw loads of water upwards, but I agree if it's not a big leak and doesn't get any worse when driving in wet weather then try the light seal first.

BTW on mine the complete inner of the quarter panel, the boot floor and spare wheel well were drenched.
