Avensis Or Auris ?

Hi guys,

I would like to buy Toyota.

As I know nothing about cars it's very hard to choose. I made some research (looked at pictures) and came to conclusion that Avensis is the best solution.

What I need is 1.8 or 2.0, automatic, gas and lots of room (for baby, wife and other stuff).

What I noticed is that Auris is much cheaper than Avensis. Why is that so? Is it only because it's smaller or is there anything else?

All in short: Avensis WG vs Auris Touring Sports. Which one for a family car and why?

Thanks in advance,

S.

Other than the Hybrid I don't think that there is a 1.8 or 2.0l petrol (gas) Auris SW.

& there isn't a 2.0 petrol Avensis anymore (at least in the UK & Germany which normally would be the main markets).

The Auris is nominally a class below the Avensis & 200kg lighter hence the price difference. I know that if you look at the load space for an Auris SW versus the Avensis Tourer it supposedly has more in absolute terms but imo the Avensis load space is more usable (longer, wider).

Hi Heidfirst,

So the Avensis would be safer choice (to get all the stuff inside)...

I went to shop today and I saw that they had 1.6 (only manual), 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2 Avensis there. Is 1.8 enough for the Avensis or should it be at least 2?

I prefer 2.0 because it sounds better :)

I also saw that there are four or five types of Avensis (Linea sol, Linea sol+, Luxury, Premium...)

The differences seem to be very small in reality. Are things like adaptive front lights, electrical mirrors, electrically adjustable seats, xenon lights and other stuff like that really important?

Thanks again

the 2.0l & 2.2l will be diesel. The 1.6l & 1.8l petrol.

What kind (urban, motorway etc.) & how much (miles/km per year) of motoring will you be doing?

Which country are you in?

The 1.8 CVT is actually a really good & reliable package as long as you aren't a boy racer (0-60 iirc is ~11 seconds).

Imo in the UK Icon spec. is the best value but I don't know how that compares to what you can get.

I have the top spec. for the UK (only because I got a really good deal) & the only thing that I would really miss dropping down to an Icon would be the electric folding mirrors (they both have electrically adjusted/heated mirrors).

As I understood 2.0 and 2.2 are also petrol and diesel both. At least here in Estonia. You can check it out here: http://www.mustakiviauto.ee/et/toyota/avensis/hinnad/

Mostly urban, but twice a month 300-500 km motorway also. As it would be my first car I couldn't tell you the yearly km. It would be probably around 10000-15000 per year.

You're comparing cars from two different market sectors - the Auris competes with the Golf/Focus and the Avensis with the Passat/Mondeo.

In the UK the only 1.8 Auris is the hybrid. May be different in your country.

Looks like you can still get the 2.0l petrol in your country but if you look there is very little difference in power output from the 1.8l.

The 2.2 is diesel only.

For a running cost you would have to compare your local fuel, tax & insurance costs to see if there is a big difference. Don't expect to actually achieve the fuel economy given in the EU figures - they give a supposedly level field (tested in a lab) but are rarely achievable in real life.

I think I have made a mistake :)

By gas I meant petrol and not real gas.

I donät want hybrid, disel or any other car like that. Just pure petrol.

The 1.8 valvematic engine has plenty power in the Avensis (nearly 150bhp). I have the auto and it's a bit "revvy", especially on hills (due to the CVT gearbox) but you get used to it. If I drive it really nicely I can get about 45 MPG or more, and driven normally about 38 MPG.

I have a mid-range specification model. The things I wouldn't like to lose are the automatic dimming rear view mirror, cruise control, climate control, heated mirrors, and electric rear windows. However it also has a reversing camera, electric lumbar support on the drivers seat, electric movement of mirrors... but I can easily live without all of these. (Reverse sensors are better than a camera IMHO). Also, the headlights on mine are just ok - xenons would be good if you do a lot of night driving.

Edit... Mine also has full ipod control from the touch screen...I wouldn't want to lose that either.
