Buying A New Auris Hybrid Ts

Hi everyone.

I am a proud owner of a 2006 Corolla 1.4 D4D. It goes like new, but I need a larger car (2 kids etc.) I am interested in buying a new Auris TS hybrid but I want to here more opinions from people who owns the car.

I tried the 1.4 D4D version it runs smoother then my old corolla but I have a feeling that my old car is faster (maybe beacuse of a 5 speed gear box) and then I tried Hybrid version and it was a pleasant suprise. Because of subvensions (hybrid/electric vehicles) in my country both cars cost the same.

I test drove it on a flat roads and city, my concern is how this cars compare on montain roads. I hear a lot of negative reviews about CVT sound. I know when I drove my corolla up on the montain in 4th gear 2500 rpm and it goes without a problem with low noise. Am I overthinking this ? ;) Please help me decide.

Thanks

It is a characteristic of the CVT to scream when you apply the throttle which then reduces to almost silence when on a level surface. You get used to it.

To sharpen things up, apply power mode and that improves things slightly but being honest, its not a car for climbing mountains.

Going down them is great as coasting down the hills recharges the Battery.

The diesel, despite being only 1400cc has more torque and would suit better going up hills.

If I were you, wait a bit longer as I believe some of the BMW engines will be installed in future diesel versions .

When we were looking I originally suggested my wife try the 1.6 petrol. She liked it but when I looked at the numbers it didn't stack up. I then thought about the 2.0 diesel which is available in Europe which would probably suit your needs better but not available to you. We have taken delivery, 1 week ago, of a hybrid which my wife absolutely loves driving.

The effortless steering and press and go driving style is perfect for rural and urban driving. It can scream a bit when you go for the Clarkson POOOWWWWEEEERRRR! but it settles down again. On hills, the engine noise might become a bit wearing.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have an Auris TS HSD 1.8 and in fact.. is.. noise is part of the life... but you get used to it!

Also you get to use of the no sound at all... which in the begining is kinda strange... too.

About the milage I'm not sure what kinda of roads you have there but I don't believe if you have a lot of steep roads if you will get the best results with a HSD version instead of a diesel ones.

Regards,
