Clutch Slipping

Hi,

I have a 2002(52) avensis 1.6 manual. About a month ago the clutch started slipping mainly in 3rd gear but also 4th. It did it for a couple of days then was fine even under hard acceleration. Then about 2 weeks ago it slipped once in 3rd gear after I set off quite quickly from a junction. Then it was fine until yesterday when it slipped a couple of times, and today it is slipping quite alot. Is this just a worn clutch or could it be something else. Thanks.

There are usually two reasons for a clutch to slip. One is simply wear of the clutch plate, if this is the case then change asap as if the wear is severe it could also cause damage to the flywheel meaning further expense. Secondly an oil leak from the rear crankshaft seal or gearbox front seal can contaminate the friction material and cause it to slip. Either way it means gearbox out to examine and rectify it.

Ok thanks. I will take it down to my local garage tomorrow. I have been quoted £295 inc vat for a replacement clutch does that sound about right.

Can't really advise on that as it has been many a year since I last had one replaced. There are several online parts providers where you could check the price of the clutch so just add the labour cost to it. I would have though 3 to 4 hours at around £50 an hour so the quote is within that area.
