Code P1251?......

Hi, I'm a newbie but hoping for some advice re my rav d4d.

Last night it went into safe mode and the mil light came on. Called the aa

Plugged into computer and code p1251 showed with this description :

Exhaust gas turbo charger control unit actuation interruption in signal line.

Mr AA said he hadn't seen that before and not a clue! My mechanic is at a loss too.

AA cleared the code and followed me several miles and then I continued home without any problems.

Driven it this morning locally doing around 10 miles and still okay!

So any ideas welcome as I dont want to spend unnecessary £ trying to find the fault especially as I've just done the dual mass!!

Thank you in advance!

Hi there and welcome,

Don't be overly concerned at the appearance of this fault code, I have had it appear about 4 times during my five year ownership the last time being about 2 years ago. Its generally though to be a problem with the variable vanes on the turbocharger sticking or an actuator problem. as the previous post suggest have a read through the many other post about it . I would also recommend the use of a system cleaning additive such as BG244 to give your fuel system a spring clean.

agree with colin, my 4.2 gave that code and symptoms with sticky vanes in the turbo. cured it with ar6600.

Just to add to what sich1 has said... I put a bottle of ar6600 in two days ago and it would appear that all the hesitation from the turbo has gone and so far no limp modes.

I took my Rav to as local diesel specialist who identified the P1251 code he was definite about the cause more than likely being a fault with the turbo boost control solenoid (known as the VSV I believe) he suggested using the r6600 before anything else and then maybe cleaning the VSV with something like WD40 - haven't done that yet.

He also said that he has rarely replaced SCV's on Toyotas and that most problems come from turbos that need a clean to fix them.

Just adding what I was told.

Thank you everyone.

I haven't had a problem since..... and done about 500 miles, but do feel a lag when accelerating sometimes so I will try the r6600.
