Toyota Avensis Verso Automatic Gearbox

Gents,

Need some advice and guidance.

Still have my trusty 2002 Avensis Verso automatic. Had stainless steel exhaust system fitted about 2 years ago and everything runs very well......except...for the gear lever change.

Wife noted end of last year that it was becoming stiffer and stiffer and over the last few weeks it has become harder to change from cold. Once warmed up it does become easier but still a lot firmer that it should be.

Looking to get some direction before I spend £££ somewehere to repalce gearbox when I think that part is all OK.

Theire are no other symptoms just a veruy hard to shift gear lever. This si the style that comes out of the left hadn side of the steering wheel area.

Anyone got any suggestions/ideas.

First thought ir to get it checked over and maybe automatic fluid change. Are there any other areas? Could the actual gear cable need replacing?

Any ideas/thoughts much appreciated.

Ken

My money is on the cable or linkage, nothing to do with the gearbox.

That's what I'm thinking and hoping!! Did see some of the cables on eBay a while back.....should have bought one. Will have a look and see how much of a pain it is to replace or maybe but the part and get a garage to agree to fit. Might see if I can get some form of silicon in the gear cable - it could be that it has just dried out.

It might be quite easy to undo the cable at the gearbox, then see if the cable is still stiff thus proving it or not.

Had a quick look yesterday and it does look like the lever control shaft that "connects" the cable to the actual gear rod that goes into the gearbox is very, very rusted. I have sprayed some releasing fluid on it but will probably buy new parts for all that areas.....bolts, plate etc and replace and see how the gear change feels after that.
