Gearbox's & Looking After Them.

Just wondering what the story is about gearbox oil. How often does it need replacing. Is it the sort of thing that needs topping up like engine oil? What starts to happen when/if the stuff in there starts to get old or lower than the recommended level?

Cheers in advance for any advice.

They say you never need to change it from the dealer, but local repairers usually recommends to change. I have changed mine for the first time in 300.000 km and i really haven't felt any difference after the change. Old oil also was clean and pure....

But it is not a hard to DIY. I would recommend to change it once a while maybe...

Unless you have signs of an oil leak from the gearbox /driveshaft area you should not need to check or replace the oil.

Haynes manual suggests changing the oil at 40,000 miles or every 4 years whichever comes first.

Its only 2 ltrs of gear oil so not expensive.

Am refering to Corolla , don't know if it is still the same on the Auris, if thats what you are refering to ?
