Turbo Gone?

Hi Guys, after having my 55 plate 2.2 Avensis for 6 years now I have been extremely happy with it & can't fault the reliability until now. Car has done 160,000miles serviced yearly (3 months ago last service).

On the motorway on Friday doing 70mph in outside lane there was a loud bang coming from the front passenger side, sounded just like a tyre had gone so I imediatley pulled over to the hard shoulder but no puncture, thought I must have run over a plastic bottle or something so jumped back in car to set off (down hill) no lights were on and the engine was still running fine (noisy motorway) tried to set off and there was no power, straight away it felt like there was no turbo & power was very weak with revs quite slow so pulled off motorway, managed to limp home averaging 25mph up hills in 3rd gear with no smoke that i could see and a schreeching type noise from what I think is the turbo as it seems to tie in with the turbo revs - still no lights on the dash at all.

Got home turned on-off several times no difference still making a noise.

Started next day - just the same starts up fine just as normal but revs slower feels weak on throttle.

Decided to strip turbo off as it cant be much of a job! :nono: full day later I have the turbo in my hand but no big damage that I can see?

Anybody know what I should be looking for? Have I gone the wrong way/could it be something else?

Cheers guys.

From what I understand about turbos, make sure there is no play in the bearing and it spins freely with no noise. If it does that, check the turbines for damage. Are the oil seals okay?

What you have described so far may eliminate the turbo as faulty.

Next are the EGR, MAF, intercooler and the piping.

I would look at the piping to make sure it has not split, cracked or collapsed.

Well done Konrad!, having had another look I have found the intercooler pipe

has blown off the Intercooler due to it's metal band corroding/failing.

Just have to re-fit turbo now Doh!

Thx. again.

Paul.
