Exhaust Back Box Removal

Hi all,

quick question - how does the flange for the backbox of the exhaust come apart? Its for a 2003 Corolla T3

Bolts have come off, rubbers are out of the way (actually i've left the back one on until i can open the flange). This has just stopped me dead!

Spray the flange with WD40, then support the middle and twist the tail or use a sharp implement or chisel to divide the flanges. The other way is to tap the rear box to force the joint to split.

I changed a 16 year old exhaust last year and separated the parts after grinding off the old corroded bolts. a quick tap separated the flanges. You have it easier since the bolts came off with no problems.

Tried that, but there seemed to be more twist in the whole pipe. I've also used a chisel to try and force them apart but the flanges just appear to bend slightly. There is a compression fitting between the flanges which seems to have chemically welded itself to both sides. Its not just a flat gasket between two faces. So i'm wondering if it need to be cut off? Theres not much space for a hacksaw!

This diagram shows how the downpipe has a stub which goes in to the tail pipe, assume its there where its 'welded' itself ?

I changed mine yesterday but it came off quite easy. Problem was actually the bolts which I had to cut off and replace.

Rubber hangers can be a pain to get off too but a little wd40 helps the whole process
