Hi guys,

my brake pedal seems to travel further than before as in,I have to press on them harder to stop. I have checked the front brake pads , they have plenty of meat on them. disc and pads were done 13/14000 ago.

I have not had the rear wheels off to check the outside pad does seem to have a decent amount of life in them although the discs do have a bit of a lip.

I have had no work done on the brakes lately, last thing to be done was the slave cylinder for the clutch was bleed by a vacuum.

the brakes and clutch do share the same fluid.

when was the brake fluid changed? It's hydroscopic & performance will decrease as it absorbs water. Toyota (& other manufacturers) recommend changing every 2 years.

Thanks for the help, yes this is on the to do list, I did grease the slider bolts when I looked at the front brakes and cleaned the discs with brake cleaner, they seem a bit better now. any other suggestions are welcome.

Dot 5 is mineral oil or silicone based and will wreck every seal in your brake system and clutch .

Dont get it mixed up with dot 5.1 which is ok - more hygroscopic but higher boiling point than dot4.

Id stick with dot4

Avensis wont benefit from dot5.1 - only really good for high performance or track
