well , got my diesel previa home at weekend, loud knocking from engine, cant really tell if its bottom top or inbetween, any suggestions on how to pinpoint without major work ?? i have taken sump off, not the easiest of jobs 4 bolts accessed by taking off panel in wheel arch and using small 10mm spanner in very confined space, have attached pics(i hope) of metal shavings /particles from corner of sump, rest of sump clean, oil pick up strainer only a few bits on it, nothing to cause oil starvation. the car has done 144,000 miles, would there be a certain amount of metal particles built up in the sump over this period or is this a consequence of the engine knocking???

update, replaced sump, put oil back in, made decision to sell, spares or repair, £1200, sold within 2hrs of placing advert on gumtree for £1100, trader/breaker bought it reckoned definitely big ends . did a quick calc about breaking it for parts before placing advert, and reckoned could easily get £1500-2000 in parts, but couldnt be bothered with hassle of it all.

did you manage to get a video/noise of knocking, probably worth putting a used engine in it and selling it on

thought about it,but lack of information on previa engine swop put me off, trawled the net for ages and found one pic of engine lowered out with subframe, so took easy option , was happy enough that i got £1100 for it, didnt want to spend out with possibly very little return on what could have been difficult job.Am suprised at amount of problems people are having with d4d ENGINES ,recently sold a rover 75 diesel(bmw engine) and it is a rock solid engine with great back up from rover 75 club, how have toyota apparently lost their reliability, if i didnt want a 7 seater, would definitly go back to bmw powered rover 75/MgZt diesel and they are cheap as chips now,in the meantime have bought a 2006 ssangyong rexton 4x4, mercedes 2.7 diesel, man, 7 seats, 55,000 miles £1650 on eBay, 44mpg on motorway,30ish combined, not bad for 2.2 tons of 4x4.

re the knocking, didnt record it but it was loud and with the sump off i laid under the car and turned enging back and forth via cranck and long bar, could hear the knock quite clearly, was quite a bit of small metal shavings in sump and in bottom of oil container when i emptied it, was suprised at how hard it was to even see big ends when looking up into bottom end, theres so many cogs n shafts and other stuff in way, when i last looked at a bottom end it was a ford cortina or such and there was nothing to see other than the crank and bearings/shells, how engines have changed !!
