Noise From Each Corner

Hi guys, so finally got myself an 09 avensis last of the old shape with 70k...After a week of driving it has developed a noise when I go over uneven surfaces

..It can only be described as the same noise the bushes make when they are done and it sounds like it's coming from every corner...but when I press the brakes the noise stops? So it must have something to do with the brakes? Any ideas?

The slider pins on the calipers wear, causng movement and the rattle. Depending on how bad the wear is they might quieten down for a while if you strip them down and pack with the correct grease. Alternatively you can buy new pins from Toyota but they're expensive (IIRC something like 30 or 40 quid) and you only get two pins in the box, ie enough for one wheel.

Edit...to check them - remove wheel and push/pull the caliper out/in towards the centre of the car/axle. If there's anything more than a ball hair of movement they're worn.

Edit again...there are some listed on eBay fairly cheap sometimes, but beware Toyota say there are several different part numbers and you need the exact one for your car.

Thanks I will check that today...my friends avensis needed new slider pins at 200k miles...mine has 70k it seems a bit soon to new new pins?

I had an 05 plate about 3 years ago with about 65k miles which had the noise but I didn't fix it. I then had a 55 plate with 30k miles with the same noise. It also had a wobble from the brakes so it got new front discs and pads. While fitting the new stuff I found one of the sliders was cross threaded so I ordered a new "set". On finding the set only had enough for one caliper, and another one would take a few days and I had an MOT looming, I greased up the other side. It pretty much got rid of the rattle, and it stayed quiet for the length of my ownership, about another 6 months.

So, to answer your question, yes I reckon yours will be the pins - but greasing them up will probably cure it for a while.

BTW it's a common problem on the new shape too, my 12 plate with under 30k has done it for about a year (10k). At it's last service Toyota "cleaned them up" but it didn't make much difference (if any). It's due it's first MOT in May so I'll be mentioning it again, it's pretty annoying.

Hope this helps :)
