Rav 4 2Ad Smoke Problem

I've only just joined, I wish I found you years ago because it would have saved alot of problems. I susoect my car has one of the suspect 2AD engines. I have a 2006 RAV 4 with a 2AD engine which I've had since new. It's been throwing out smoke intermittently for the past 3 years (and steadly getting worse (not small puffs but big clouds), the fuel consumption has been increasing and I have to put oil in it between services for the last 2 years. I live in Mijas in Spain which is very hilly and I have some loss of power in that I now have to go down to first gear on some corners that I used to take in second uphill which is getting worse or if it's really cold outside the car has no power but under normal conditions the car drives fine except for the clouds of smoke. There is no rhyme nor reason to when the car throws out smoke either. I drive relativly low km's, approx 12,000km a year. Toyota original had the car and cleaned out the carbon trap (at least that's what it's called in Spain) and told me I was driving too slow and that the diesel formula had changed. I was so peeved as a woman by the way I was treated that I took the car to an independant mechanic with a very good reputation. He has had my car so many times over the past 3 years it's embarassing but he has never been able to find anything wrong with the car except for the carbon deposits. He has talked to Toyota in Spain over the years who have said to him that this engine is prone to carbon deposits and said it's one of those things. If I'm reading correctly this is one of the signs that it's a problem with the entire engine and it needs changing. Obviously I'm out of the extended warrenty in terms of years but I'm way under the km's, is there anything else I can do apart from change the engine!

Muchisimo Gracias

(p.s. I went back to the Toyota dealership this morning who again told me I was drving to slow and it's the diesel because in their opinion unless the car is guzzeling serious amounts of oil then the engines fine)
