Knocking Noise From Rear Of Brand New Aygo

Just to separate this out from the 'New Car Time' thread, I'll give some details here. My new 2015 Aygo has a knock/clunk coming from the nearside rear. I took it in, and they found that both rear shock absorbers are faulty (internal damper loose/ not assembled properly). They've ordered two new ones, due in after Easter.

Hi I to have had my Aygo x - pression for 2 weeks picked it up on 12.4.15 nice 3 door in white . I have a rear right clunking noise mostly on uneven roads your post is identical to my problem, it's going back to the garage on 2 may hope they can sort it feel a bit sad as it's my first brand new car I've ever had in 16 years and it got a problem 😕😕already.

Sorry to hear that. Yes, it seems we're not alone. There must have been a faulty batch of dampers from the factory that supplies them to Toyota. I suspect right now someone is having to fall on his sword in a factory in Japan somewhere.

It has taken the shine off the experience of buying a new car for me too. Specially the video on my Dashcam showing the mechanic test-driving my car with a second mechanic in dirty overalls in the back, listening to where the knocking noise was coming from. They had the back seats folded forward, and matey in front thought he'd have some fun driving like mad to throw matey at the back round the car. Red-lining the new engine before it's run in, laughing and swearing, farting loudly, and generally misbehaving, using racist and misogynistic language. The car was left dirty inside and out, too. Then I had to wait weeks for them to fit the new shock absorbers, and the car was left dirty inside and out again. I'm very particular about my car, and I was very upset by all this. What did I do? Kept quiet and just cleaned the car myself. I'm like that. Avoid conflict. The sales staff at the front are very professional and you're treated well, with free coffee and comfy seating, etc. but the mechanics are a bit rough.

I would be inclined to drop the Dealer Principal an e-mail explaining what happened, that you have a video of the mechanics behaviour, asking whether the red-lining would have caused any damage, whether this is typical of the work of their service department, and stating that this has changed your level of trust in the dealership.

OK - you've cleaned the car, but that isn't the point. Technicians shouldn't be treating customer cars in this way, could lead to the dealership losing business, and if it continues, other customer's cars may get damaged.

If you don't do anything - how will your car get treated the next time it goes into the dealer??

The shock absorbers for the Aygo probably come from a plant in Europe.

If I had a video of that you could get free servicing out of them or say you put it on the Internet. I wouldn't let them get away with it.

My Mk 1 Aygo had a problem when I first bought it brand new and I felt the same but then I had four years of trouble free motoring.

Ok so dropped my car off today for a check of the clunk was supposed to go in this weekend but noise was doing me in! They just called and said shock absorbers need replacing....so must be a dodgy batch out there and my poor 'Barry'(cars name ) is one of them. Hope that's it after that and nothing else.

@Frostyballs and Martin... you're right of course, but I just want to forget about it now... that's best for my peace of mind. @Curlywurly, let's hope that solves it. Mine still makes a small clunk on rough roads, but I'm going to just ignore that.

They didn't do anything about the squealing brakes. 'They'll bed in over time' they told me. Well they didn't, so I did the job myself over the weekend. Wheels off, calipers off, brake pads out, brake cleaner sprayed on the pads and discs and wiped clean, then a very small dab of copper grease on the back of each pad, and reassembled. Lovely and quiet now. The car is a pleasure to drive, and so I'm going to forget any of this happened and get on with enjoying it.

We have just taken delivery of our new Aygo and it has rattled and clunked from the rear from the moment we collected it last week. It goes in on Tuesday for two new rear dampers to be fitted and I am amazed that such an obvious fault was missed / allowed to escape the production line.

Wow new car you have a vid of tech guys abusing it. Then you have to do

Repair your own brakes.

I can understand that you don't what any grief, but Toyota service has been appalling for you.

The dealer boss has the right to know how his team are treating hard won customers. And you have proof.

These idiots are not techs just morons. Make a copy vid hand it to the main man. Other customers have the right to better treatment don't forget them. You are not the only one Sir.

I totally agree. New cars are a lot of money so I would expect a much better service. At least write to Totota HQ and let them know how your feeling as they don't want to lose customers.

Garage still have my car shock changed still making the noise they are keeping it to take the body work apart it's 3 weeks old! Although the lady was lovely I'm not happy wishing I didn't buy it yes. Picking up courtesy car tomorrow as will now not be looked at until Tuesday.

@Curlywurly, I'll be watching this with interest, as mine is also still clunking, but it is a lot quieter than before they changed the shocks. Sounds like it's from the right rear of the car. Keep us informed of the outcome, please.

When I first heard the noise, I was certain that it came from the spare wheel, rocking from side to side on its rubber block. It seems strange to me that the spare is secured by a central hand-tightened bolt and rests on one rubber block, so naturally it can (and does) rock (rattle) from side to side. When I took the car in, the service department told me it was the dampers making the noise and not the wheel (but they did not and could not explain why the wheel is secured the way it is).

The car is booked in next Tuesday for the dampers to be changed and I will make sure that they examine the spare wheel and explain why it is fastened the way it is, because I am still certain, that at least some of the nose is coming from it and not just the dampers alone.

I will keep you posted @Xpression trying so hard to be positive about it the thought of it being pulled apart isn't filling me with joy just worry. @spospe hope you get yours sorted mine doesn't have a spare just a repair kit which I took out completely to see if it was that if only it had been that simple *sigh* .

whatever you do DO NOT shy away go to the dealer and open your mouth and tell them in no uncertain terms your grievances,you have this on video so they cannot argue with you,if you say nothing the same may happen again when your car goes in for a service and they test drive it before handing it back to you.

it sounds like they are animals,i would also mention it to toyota uk as it doesn't look good for them.

Yes, I also have the tyre repair/inflator kit, but will check to see if I can eliminate it as a possible rattle. My worry is that the new shocks are also knocking (though not as badly as the originals).

I've just picked up another one whilst mine is being taken apart I want to keep it love it! Drives lovely seems quiter than mine it's also much nicer to look at its white like mine but has black alloys with the red flashes on the front and side told the guy if mines not fixed I'm keeping it ! If only! .

Don't think it's been a wasted time buying the car though as its done some help. It's made me feel good I didn't buy one so not all wasted. Hope you get it sorted soon but you really could save loads by complaining. I think I wait for them to iron out the problems before I consider one.

I really just want to give them a chance to sort it and if they can't then yes I will be saying enough is enough and either start again with another one or get my money back as well as me deserving to own a trouble free car i also believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt. If I was reading all the comments about the problems I would do just the same hold off for a bit sounds like a good plan.
