1st let me say hello to all you guys..........

I`m looking to buy a used 2011 auris 1. 8 Hybrid with 40K km on it.. since this is my 1st hybrid car i have some concerns.

from doing some research i see the Battery is suppose to last 8 years or 160,000km.. which ever comes first. lets say if the Battery dies is the car still usable via gas?

Where is the best place to buy a replacement Battery when the time comes?

How easy is it to change the battery your self?

I think you'll find the Hybrid Battery was warrantied for 8 years/160000 km but it is designed to last far longer than the warranty period, the Battery should last for the vehicles normal service lifetime and not require any attention.

I answer to the other questions no if the Battery fails you cannot carry using "gas" only and the best ( if not only ) place to buy a replacement will be a Toyota dealer - replacement requires specialist equipment only available to your local dealer.

I wouldn't worry tho', we have loads of people with Mk2 Priusususesisas which are over 10 years old and still holding a surprisingly good charge! And even cabbies who are charging around all day all year who still haven't managed to kill the batteries.

The Battery management on the HSD deserves some kind of award! I figured they'd last 2-3 years, 5 tops, but that they're going on 10 and still delivering usable power is pretty damned impressive. (Now if only laptop batteries lasted that long; I've never gotten one to last more than 2-3 years without a horrific loss in capacity!)

In a word, NO, if you are not trained! A very useful series in Car Mechanics mag. Part 3 of January 2015 issue, comments that the hybrid batteries are both high voltage and high current, and DC. In addition the inverter contains many capacitors. So, it's not a matter of slipping in a new assembly. The Battery has to be isolated, and the inverter fully discharged and tested for residual charge before any work. At least, this is how I understand it. More detail in the article.

There are companies out there who can repair HV batteries, I looked into this myself before buying our auris hsd, the unit is full of many slim cells, that can be changed individually, but really don`t worry about the Battery life....it`ll keep going for years and years.
