Hi all, I have a 57 t180 and notice a lost in power and just want to see if there is a way before taking to garage to diy check the exhaust if there is a hole etc. besides getting underneath the car to look??

I just hope it's in the mid / back box.

Thanks all

Put your hand over the end with the engine running. The pressure should build up and release when you let go. If it's blowing you'll hear it. Watch it'll be hot, use a rag or something.

Thanks. Just did the test and heard nothing . Maybe it's just my head playing tricks. Wonder why I feel like I am losing power and the noise??

Are you just allowing it to idle and covering the tailpipe yourself because perhaps it's needing revved a bit before you start hearing it. Best to have a helper rev it while you cover the exhaust... plus you can look underneath while you do it, it's unlikely you'll see smoke coming out of any hole or gaps in the joints but you often get that shimmering heatwave effect where it's blowing

I have an Avensis 2.0 lt D4D with a DRONE sound with a vibration between 15 & 1800 RPM & what I thought was a blowing exhaust; I even have had the seal on the mid exhaust joint changed.

However this did not cure either problem, but three months later my cylinder head gasket blew.

I got my cylinder head gasket replaced, but was told by my mechanic that the head was heavily carboned up & that the injectors were worn, possibly due to using laundered diesel.

My injectors were sent to an injector specialist who said that the injectors had had acid erosion possibly from using laundered fuel, which incidentally I had never knowingly purchased, but I live in Ireland where diesel fuel laundering is rampant & had been buying fuel from one supplier who was a few cents cheaper than the mainstream garages.

I had the head cleaned as best it can be, along with the EGR valve, got new injectors & had the whole lot refitted: not a cheap job!

Behold no more DRONING noise & vibration or the sound of a leaking exhaust.

However one year later my DRONE wioth its vibration its back again after 10000 miles.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this DRONING sound which is most noticable between 1500 & 1800 RPM.

By the way stopping the air filter box intake pipe from vibrating is not the solution, nor is securing all loose panels around the engine; nor is it a bearing.

I have just purchased a VW Touran 2.0 lt TDI with the exact same sound, what the hell is causing what is obviously an engine vibration problem?

Thanks all for the advise.

Update : I took car to a garage and as they fitted brake pads and disc on all four corners I asked them to check the exhaust.. No hole or any problems stated :) so will look at the air on this weekend and wrap something around that hose..any idea on what to best to use??

May need to purchase this somewhere.

Thanks again for the information. Started to do stuff on the car again after a long delay

Thanks mate, I have already found that and saved on one of my webpages for reference when I start the 'major' operation.
