Could anybody point me in the right direction.

Ive just replaced the brake master cylinder on my neighbours 2000 avensis vvti,a pagid unit from euro car parts

The two o rings that seal the reservoir to the master cylinder had no replacements with the new master cylinder, so I put the old ones back that are weeping.

Ive tried the dealers but they cant help in tracking down new orings which I find strange, are there any good brake specialists out there that may be able to help

Would plumber's PTFE thread tape provide a seal?

thank you for the information my local toyota dealer was useless.

On further investigation the fault lay with the new master cylinder a pagid unit from euro car parts.

The bores where the tubes on the reservoir sit are .8mm larger than the original causing a no seal state so the unit as gone back.

I think its the dealers for this one, though I fear I need a comfy chair when I get the price any info on what the dealers might charge?

Have you tried a local car spares other than Euro Car Parts? They may sell the correct master cylinder cheaper than the dealer. But the dealer price may not be that bad.

Another option which depends on the condition of the master cylinder, is a new seal kit.

well trhings are taking a turn in a different direction.Got hold og the new orings [thanks for the info)

tHe fault which appeared after a lot of wheel spinning during the icy weather back in jan was the brake pedal being very spongy and going to the floor is still there after fitting the new master cylinder

So the fault must lie with abs unit, that seems pretty llikely using google, valves in the abds unit are sticking not allowing a solid pedal. The abds light isnt on and the abs action works.

Is their any means of accessing the ABS ecus fault code system using flash codes of the ABS light to see if light can be shed on it?

The way to access the ECU fault codes, is to use a paper clip or wire on pin outs 4 and 13 of the diagnostic socket. Turn the key to IGN and the ABS, SRS and for pre-vvti cars the EML will flash morse code style.

If the ABS light has been on at any time apart from pre-check (bulb and system ok), then a fault code will be stored.

Go to the third page of the PDF link for the list of codes.

http://www.testroete.com/car/Toyota/mr2%20spyder/References/Technical%20Training/05%20-%20Brake%20Systems/20.pdf

Now if the ABS light does not illuminate when normally starting the engine, the test or at all it must have blown.

I have had total ABS ECU failure and changed it: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/167252-fixed-abs-module-failure-on-1998-avensis/

Now lets concentrate with your soft brake pedal.

I think you still have air lock in the system that needs a good pressure bleed to clear. You did work with the master cylinder, so it will take more effort to get the brakes solid. Getting a replacement ABS valve unit, may fix the problem. Any valve unit issue does not effect ABS ECU regarding codes.

Check every pipe and hose in the brake system. A flexible hose may be weak under pressure giving the sponge effect.

Lets hope you find the problem.
