Extended Warranty

My Gen 3 Prius solar is now 6 years old and having a 70k service.

It's extended Toyota warranty is about to expire and fortunately so far hasn't been required.

I have been offered 2 more years warranty by Toyota for £540.

Is this a good deal? Would you bother? Opinions welcome!

The extended warranty will also include two years Toyota Roadside Assistance, which would otherwise cost you around £132 for the two years.

Its a personal choice and it depends how much you value piece of mind. Hopefully one won't need the extension, but...

Depends on what you want the warranty for. Total peace of mind or just the hybrid Battery?

If the former, then Toyota are offering (locally at least) some good deals on extended warranties.

If it's the latter, Toyota offer the Hybrid Health Check to those who have their car serviced by Toyota. It extends the warranty on the HV Battery upto 10 years/unlimited miles - assuming you keep upto date on your servicing.

£540 for two years sounds good. My gen3 T3 was £800ish for 2 years last November.

Are you being offered a limited mileage warranty or unlimited mileage?

Mine was unlimited (I do 20K+ miles a year).

Not only does the extended warranty include Toyota roadside assistance, but if you have other toyotas, they can get toyota roadside assistance at the discounted rate.

I got the extended warranty because my gen3 prius is an early one (Nov 09) with the 3 year warranty.

Based on GC's experiance and other forum posts, I went for peace of mind.

It came in handy when the dealer diagnosed a wheel bearing failure and was able to replace it under the extended warranty.

£540 for two years is a very good deal .. if it is "toyota" extended warranty (and not a dealer warranty that some Toyota dealers offer).

I don't think this is a 'Toyota' one, I haggled hard in January and got nowhere near that price.

+1

If it is indeed a Toyota one, I would love to know who the dealer is!

Most Toyota dealers are currently offering the Toyota extended warranty under a 'two years for the price of one offer'.

Ok, extended warranty now bought.

It is indeed a Toyota warranty.

As Frosty pointed out it includes Toyota Roadside Assistance which I would definitely have gone for if I hadn't bought the warranty.

This brings the "real" cost for me down to about £200 a year.

This warranty is good for 10,000 miles a year, and as a bonus It also covers all MOT work required over £10 which is nice.

I reckon it's a no-brainer for us early Gen3 drivers!

I've had loads of new parts on mine under the original warranty and then a new inverter since. Fingers crossed the rest will be ok :ermm:

Why doesn't Mr T have such offers around when I need them? :ermm:

Not sure if there is anything to stop you extending your warranty now.

Just add it to end of your currrent one. ;)

Also, the OPs warranty is a limited mileage one rather than unlimited so it will be a bit cheaper.

And you can pay the extended warranty by interest free monthly payments so you don't need to pay it all upfront. :)

Alan,

Renewed mine for 2 years last Oct./Nov..

Don't think Toyota will renew 18 months in advance :disgust: .... and the car will be >7 years by then (I think there's some condition about >7 years old vehicles).

Mike,

If they don't agree to sell me one in advance for my iQ (5 years std. warranty ending in November), I will feel bad indeed! :drunk:

Toyota extended warranties used to be for cars up to 8 years of age, but this was increased (think in 2012/13) to up to 10 years of age. The extended warranty is also transferable to a new owner should the car be sold within the extended warranty period, for a fee of £20.

Don't see why you shouldn't be able to buy an extended warranty now in preparation for November.

Thanks for that. We're look at extending the warranty on our old IQ where it is due to expire in October.

My existing warranty had another month to run so Mr T happily postponed the start of the new one.

For the first extended warranty, there are different conditions.

But at the moment, an existing Toyota extended warranty can be extended up to 10 years with unlimited mileage.

No harm in asking.

Things are different when extending an existing extended warranty.

Check the latest T&Cs.

I would post a link but Toyota UK have jazzed up their website and boring stuff like T&Cs seem to have vanished.

  • 5 weeks later...

Just picked up (new to me) 14 plate Yaris Excel Hybrid from Inchcape Toyota in Oxford. They were offering a 2 for 1 Toyota extended warranty at £364 (low mileage option) - which seemed to good to miss out on. So I have 4 years Mft warranty - plus an additional two years. Apparently all I need to do is ring them (Toyota) and tell them the mileage - just before the Mft Warranty runs out.
