Hello Experts,

I have a 51 plate Yaris (free tronic) and it's developed a rather embarrassing problem I and the garage can't seem to resolve,

Basically, when pulling out from a junction from a standing still positition the car bunny hops like mad until I can get some speed and into third Gear. It does this in first and second gear! And seems to have started when I was stuck in heavy traffic.

I have not got any warning lights on the dash apart from a red temp light when I start the car that instantly turns green then goes off within 5 minutes. Diagnostics check shows no errors.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance..

red light is normal as long as it goes green after as you described. Tells you when the engines cold, when green/blue.

The Freetronic is the predecessor to the MMT and also a fairly terrible gearbox. The juddering is usually a sign the clutch needs replacing and resetting. May also be an issue with the hydraulic fluid or actuator but hard to know and diagnose without wasting lots of money replacing parts. Very few specialists with the Freetronic and even Toyota garages will have little to no experience with them unless it's such a good garage that they've held on to their mechanics since the Freetronic first came out!

With the MMT, you can sometimes get it working again by disconnecting the Battery for a while so the computer resets, but after a short while it'll go back.

IMHO the best fix would be to sell it on and get a manual one, but this isn't always practical...
