Clutch Replacement Not Under Warranty?

My Aygo, 5 yrs old and 17000, on the clock needs a new clutch. I have read many posts here about this problem, has anyone actually managed to get Toyota to replace this under warranty? I have had the car for 2 years, one owner before me, and I took out extended warranty on it. And yes, it is the dreaded "automatic" model. Not sure how she drove it, but I've been driving normal automatics for about 20 years, and never had to have a clutch replaced. Is it worth having a fight with Customer Services over it? The car has the fault of slipping into neutral, and the warning light flashing, rather disconcerting to say the least. Happened once last year, and just done it again this year (and I do mean year) but then again within a week.Have reason to believe it did it at least once for previous owner, but she didn't report it or do anything about it.

Any views?

Hello Sue - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

First of all, is the extended warranty a Toyota or a third party warranty?

Good question! In that I took it out with Toyota when I bought the car, ie paid the garage, who are Toyota main dealers, I assume it is with Toyota. Other than the booklet giving the initial warranty conditions, I do not appear to have additional paperwork...hadn't needed it before...

Clutches are covered under the new car warranty and extended warranty for issues other than wear and tear (ie a manufacturing fault), and this is common across most manufacturers. Even with the new car warranty, most manufacturers only cover clutches for a limited time, and not the full duration of the warranty.

Look at the following page under 'What's covered' and 'What's not covered' - http://www.toyota.co.uk/caring-for-your-toyota/warranty/extended-warranty.json

Have you taken the car into your Toyota dealer for assessment, and, if so, what have they said?

Warranties are tricky things. I am in the motor trade and the amount of people who have been mislead when buying a used car warranty is astonishing.

All warranties do not cover fair wear and tear only mechanical failure. So for example if you clutch is worn and not physically broken it is highly unlikely that it will be covered.

They replaced the clutch on mine under warranty in the end as "they found some corrosion"... however, that was June, and a few weeks ago it slipped into neutral again, so problem hadn't been solved. It has now, I've got rid of it and bought a Nissan!

Complain to head office customer services, and keep on shouting, it is crazy that they still fit rubbish system.

My car is still in the 5 year warranty period from new.  I've just been towed in by AA to the main dealer I bought it from saying that the clutch is gone.  The car has done 20,000 miles and has been serviced regularly though not by main dealer.  Does anyone know if they are likely to quibble about repairing it under warranty.  They have booked it in for an investigation tomorrow which may cot me £50.

It would probably help if you had given some more information on the vehicle - type, age, engine, manual or automated manual (MMT) transmission etc.

Generally clutches are considered a consumable item & are not covered for wear & tear. This is where maintaining goodwill by having it serviced at a dealer can sometimes help get a better resolution.

If it is a manufacturing or assembly fault, then may possibly be covered. However, if wear and tear, no.

A lot of misinformation and conjecture in this thread.  The benefit of such Forums is to share ownership experience; consequently I would ask if the OP has actually completed a search on this Forum?

HINT: Clutch (for an MMT) can and should be covered under both factory and extended warranty.

SOURCE:  I've had it done by Toyota GB twice and likely a third time in my ownership.

Bear in mind the topic dates back to 2015.

The most recent comnents are in relation to dotbowen@talktalk.net's post on Tuesday and they have only provided limited information. Unlike the OP, we don't know whether the Aygo mentioned in Tuesday's post has a manual transmission, MMT or the X-Shift  - the later form of MMT used in the second generation Aygo which went on sale partway through 2014.

Fair point 😁
