Huge Repair Bill From Jemca

2.2 d4d 2005 avensis

had my engine blown so the parts to fix it are as follows:

3800 pounds engine without auxiliaries but with labour

200 pounds for 1 injector which was wet for about 3-5 years.

i said that yeah, 4k for another 7-9 years it's not bad

after a week i received a call saying that:

clutch was worn so they ordered one

another part which i forgot what it was

after replacing all this, the engine died/stop working so 3 more injectors ordered.

not new but refurbished (as new...i forgot the term for them)

i'm expecting to see a 6000pounds bill

i'm losing my mind here... what do you think?

ouch could have bought 3 new (used) cars for the same money? :D

lol they have ripped you off completely. First of all who authorized them to order a clutch and fix it. If you dident tell them to then let them do it and simply dont pay because you dident ask for it. Also I would never get a main dealer to touch my engine if its out of warranty, let alone repair a whole engine! Sorry to say but its your fault here.

Presumably it is too late now - but my choice would have been to go for another car, and get whatever one could for the Avensis, rather than going for the replacement engine. Certainly for £4-6000 one could buy something reasonable.

However, as most of the work has been done, it is too late to withdraw.

Oops! I made the decision to have my gearbox repaired, because I had the budget for that, and it was easier than buying another car, whose history may not be as known as my own. The work was in £100's not four figure, so easier to justify.

I would not put a car into a garage without the funds in place, and would tell them upfront to so that they don't do the work.

Then as "Toyota" said, was all the work authorised? He is right about getting main dealer to do work on an older car. A bit harsh re: the own fault.

Now the garage may be in a position to get their money back after a time, using legal channels which could mean the loss of your car!

But I hope that will never happen. I hope you are joking about not being able to pay for the work done.

Personally I think the 2.2 diesel head gasket is worse than the 1.6/1.8 vvti oil burning issue, because it is far more expensive to fix, and some members on this forum have had the fault come back later.

At least the engine will have a warranty in place

I will like others follow this with interest.

Ouch! If this ever happened to me I would just break my car for spares.


I only paid £1750 for mine, 99k 2.2D4D top spec T-Spirit so leather etc loads of extra's so if mine ever went bang I would easily get my money back breaking it.

Has anyone claimed an engine with the insurance company?

How do you propose to claim on your insurance for a new engine? The engine hasn't blown due to an accident, and saying otherwise would be fraud.

The insurer will almost certainly send an assessor out to assess the damage, and I doubt whether they would allow the claim.

Aside from that, even if a claim was successful, due to the age of the car the insurance company would write it off, and presumably pay you something around the market value - which would be a lot less than £6,000

You have been given an estimate for repairs which you have authorised, these repairs are wear and tear, you will not be able to claim on your insurance

Your problem is that you have entered into a contract with Jemca and they will be entitled to recover there costs as you gave them the authorisation to go ahead with the work

My old 2008 2.2D had 143k on clock with some beginning symptoms of head gasket: Jemca ran their eyes (whilst doing a service) over it: Told me yes, probably head-gasket, £4-5-6k to fix engine but don't bother as it ain't worth it (think they quoted £1,500-ish trade-in).

I traded it in elsewhere for somewhat less & was relieved to have got rid of the problem.

Sorry to read your story but cars break down: It's not a question of if but what breaks, when & how much.

I assume Jemca would sue over unpaid bills, but don't know: If they did could they recover the funds?

What early symptoms did you suffer?

Significant, ongoing, coolant loss, for several months: No apparent leaks, checked by 2 garages: Some oil loss, after years of almost none.

I could have taken the gamble and seen if it carried on & survived but decided not to: My choice, my decision: Kinda hope there's a happy bunny out there with a bargain that lasts for years: The old beast had NEVER GONE WRONG on me since I got it, 6 months old, 8k on clock.

Symptoms: white smoke when starting the engine, black smoke whilst driving, leaking injector and on the final day oil coming out and lose of power....

Annoying but understandable. Somehow.....

Ah sorry to hear this.

I serviced mine around 5,000 miles ago.

Coolant flush

Oil

Oil filter

Fuel filter

Engine filter

Oil is still right on the mark and coolant level is spot on too, have no obvious leaks the side and bottom of the engine is bone dry. Currently on 105k engine temp sits a smidgen under half when up to temperature so hoping mine stays healthy for many more years to come!

John, I am glad you paid the bill.

Now the car has been repaired, are you going to keep it, and is the repair guaranteed?

With the 2.2 diesel engines reputation some are put off. Hopefully the car should be fine. Just keep an eye on it.

Car is okay now. No trace of smoke coming out and I've tested it quite often.

They gave me 1 year on parts an labour. Better then what it had before ...

Car is a keeper. No point or will for selling it. Hopefully it will last me for 9 more years at least
