Gen 7 140 Vvti Pre Cats?

My father has a 2001 140 vvti Celica which had a replacement bottom end engine from Toyota a few years back due to excessive oil burning. It's run sweetly ever since.

I've recently bought a 2003 MR2 which also has the 140 vvti, which is prone to pre-cat failure, leading to terminal engine damage. Its a well-known problem with the mr2s. Fortunately, mine has had the pre-cats removed before any problem could occur.

However, I'm now wondering if, since they are essentially the same engine, the Celica 140 also has a pre-cat failure issue? I've tried googling it, but couldn't seem to come up with much.

Any ideas?

It's an issue I have never seen or heard mentioned in the Celica community....so I guess.

That's what I wondered. Obviously the exhaust setup on the MR2 is totally different, but I still thought the Celica may have precats fitted in the manifold. Anyone else know?

140 celica only has the one cat underneath, there isn't one on the manifold itself

Is this true????....... am an owner of a 02 Avensis vvti that is always looking for a little extra go and particularly innovative ways of gaining it DIY. I know that certain Celica models cams with a 143 bhp version of the 1ZZ-FE engine as opposed to the 127 bhp we have in our 5 door hatchbacks.

From what I've read so far you have a slightly bigger bore throttle body and intake manifold, different exhaust manifold and reprogrammed ECU which makes sense.

So is it true that you have a single cat underneath on the 1ZZ-FE engined Celicas rather than the two in the exhaust manifold that we are burdened with. If this is true it goes a long way towards modifying my exhaust system, I've been bending my brain around how I would go about removing these precats without freaking my ECU out completely.I know a single underbody cat isn't like a decatted system but it gives me more scope for tweaking it plus the opportunity of fitting a decent extractor style manifold :)

I had an 2001 Avensis SR which was 147bhp I think and that used to go well loved that car had it for nearly 11 years and missed it from the day I sold it in 2012
