Not Toyota related but members may be interested, wife's PHEV, she does 25miles per day (round trip) set in Electric mode for 5 days, charges Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs nights. Saturday and Sunday she does 100/120 miles mainly motorway, Monday morning it's already fully charged. it charges while she drives Sat/Sun biult in Genny...

After working out cost of a full charge and she has brimmed it, it's doing 132 per Gal of petrol. only 2 litre but it picks up well. maybe one day all cars will be built like this...

I'm pretty sure electric is the future. It beats combustion engines in every way. The main problem is carrying enough energy for longer journeys. The energy density of petrol and diesel is quite phenomenal compared to a Battery, so the question is how long we will be using fossil fuels for range extension. Hydrogen is one alternative.

So yes, I think you are right - PHEV is probably the best compromise we have between performance, practicality and low emissions. But I'm not sure there will be just one technology to rule them all. I also think we will have a mix. It all depends on your needs.

You should also see this in conjunction with self driving cars. In the future there will probably many more people who can live without actually owning a car. You just grab one to drive you where you need to go that day.
