I have a slight issue with the light switch on the indicator stalk. If the switch is turn a little beyond the headlight position, the lights go out.

I have taken the switch apart so far.post-76861-0-57357100-1439897153_thumb.jpost-76861-0-17694300-1439897176_thumb.jpost-76861-0-21486300-1439897208_thumb.jpost-76861-0-52673300-1439897217_thumb.jpost-76861-0-90535100-1439897244_thumb.jpost-76861-0-15680300-1439897262_thumb.jpost-76861-0-84039800-1439897302_thumb.j

After cleaning, moving the grease and bending the contacts, it is a little better but not perfect.

I may need another control so on the look out for one with the front foglight position, for T22 Mk1 model.

there is one with the option to make a offer maybe £10. but it does look well used. should be able to pick one up from the breakers.

I wonder if the facelift ones fit?

All mk1 Avensis from 1997 - 2002 switches fit, with the difference of front fog lamp option for the higher spec cars.

If it was not for the difference of screw fittings, the mk2 may have worked too.

I have half cured the problem by cleaning the contacts, so the lights don't flicker.

If I can take the stalk apart further, I might be able to fix the twist action so the switch cannot go beyond a certain point. The other option would be to cannibalise a later mk2 stalk to fix the problem. It is hard to find a good condition stalk which is not as worn when the youngest is 13 years old!

It sounds like the lug that stops the switch from going too far has got bent or wore might be more hassle than it's worth trying to fix. I see your problem in trying get a good second hand one, how much are they new might be surprised.

I have been on eBay and mk2 will not fit into the bracket.

I did find this :- http://www.northwestcarparts.co.uk/Toyota-Avensis-SR-headlight-indicator-stalk-switch-2000-2003

The only difference between this and mine is the black box attached via a cable.

i wonder if this makes a difference to the operating of any of the light functions, or the update got everything integrated doing away with the box? This is from a younger car

I will see if i can make the switch firmer.

I sourced a decent switch from http://www.northwestcarparts.co.uk/Toyota-Avensis-SR-headlight-indicator-stalk-switch-2000-2003

Adam there was very helpful and he actually owns an Avensis Mk1 diesel.

I they had an Avensis in but the wing I wanted was sold.

Hopefully this is one less issue.

Final update.

I got the replacement indicator stalk and fitted it to my car. Everything works and the lights do not flicker when switching from side to headlights. The stalk is firmer being it came from a later Avensis CDX 2002.

My car has being the GLS 1998 has the front for position, plus an extra box with a circuit board. post-76861-0-48754900-1441287841_thumb.j

The replacement does not have this box, and I can only assume that it was an after thought on the earlier cars, and the update is more integrated.

The only other operating difference is the switch now stays in rear setting, then when the lights turn off, goes to front fog position. The older switch sprang back to front position after switching on the rears. So in both cases no forgetting to turn off the rear fog lights or turning them on unnecessarily. Whilst thinking about it, this is what the extra circuit box is for, and the change in design.

So all Avensis Mk1 early or late are fully compatible.

Thanks to Mark & Adam at North West carparts for sourcing and sending the switch. They sent one earlier and it disappeared in the post. They sent another by next day delivery via courier. Very pleased.

Another great post, Konrad, all the information for anyone with the same problem and lots of pictures. I hope your next car is an Auris CVT so I can save all your posts and put them on a DVD. Meantime here's your award.
